Idler Pulley?

hey fellas, having just picked up my navara not even 2 weeks back, i seem to of hit a bad run, it went in for the catch up 80,000km service because the old owner skipped it, everything was all good, but the timing belt needed to be replaced..

As soon as i picked it up, its started squealing at idle and gets louder as u accelerate. Spoke to the mechanic and he said he had noticed the idler pulley was nearing the end of its life and it looked like it was gone.

Now ive been told this is quite a costly part, so im wondering if anyone has had to get one themselves, and if they know of a decently priced shop..

for the ZD30 of course.

I've replaced a couple in my Patrol back when i used to think it was fun to drive bogholes.

You shouldn't need to replace entire pulley. Just the inner bearing. About $20 from Burson's from memory.

I would be shitty that the mech noticed it was shagged but still fitted the new timing chain anyway.
Also heard the bearing can be replaced cheaply.

yeah, i was pretty filthy to have this happen, because there hadnt been any noise coming from the engine previously, but i guess its just part of owning a vehicle :(

I've done 3 of these in the last 50.000k's.remove pulley and use a socket + vice to remove old bearing.new bearings are approx $7 each,use old bearing to + vice to install new bearing.

Nissan are bloody hopeless when it comes to pricing on new parts,service isn't much better.

Here's another alternative from one of the posters (Scott)on the Explore Oz forum about the same issue, he is also a mechanic.

I thought I would just enlighten everybody for whom may happen to own one of these engines.
The 3.0 diesel Patrol engine can end up with a noisy belt tensioner bearing. Now when you go to the lovely chaps at Nissan, they want to charge you around $360.00 to replace the lot.
Well I have been doing some experimenting.
You can get away with an after market Commodore pulley.
Part number EP001. Nuline part number.
You will need a 17-18mm ID flat washer to space the bearing out about 2mm so it doesn't rub on the bracket.
All up cost for about $35.00. A significant saving.
Hope this helps anybody in the future to save dome dollars.
