GU 4.2 turbo 3" exhaust

Post by EricB »

Hi Guys

I am in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and was wondering if anyone can recommend an exhaust place.

I am after a 3" mild steel exhaust and dump pipe for a GUII 4.2TD.

Does anyone pre make a bolt on system or will it have to be custom made?

Cheers

Cool sounds like they ship all over Aus too. I have emailed for a quote.
What did you pay for yours?

I have had 1 quote in melb for a mild steel custom build.
$1000
Its just hard to be without the car for 2 days to have it done.

Beaudesert will ship anywhere in Aus AFAIK. I have their system also - top darts! Love it to bits, Pulls hard and whistles like a true TD should!

Wats with all these high quotes?

I got a full 3" mild steel exhaust and also screamer pipe put in off my wastegate and chrome bling 3.5" tip and all new mounts and re angled dump pipe for $550 took then a bit over half a day. This was on the Tb42 though and also had a resiantor and straight thru muffler fitted but muffler got taken out and sold so was only $500 in the end haha

the old man has the stage 2 MTQ kit on his td42t with a 3 inch exhaust and an MTQ dump pipe, made a 108.7kw at the rears on 35s at 11psi. When you get the exhaust done, get them to weld in a nut for a pyro, when a good dyno tuner tunes it, they will check EGT's.

Cool. Will the exhaust guy know what size nut and where to put it?

I get them straight off the shelf at MTQ (DTS) I fit heaps of them, 3" straight through muffler, and dump pipe, I do an exhaust kit with dyno, adjust boost and fuel, usually nets about 30% increase with no increase in exhaust temps from standard in GU TD42.

It would be wise to take aboard that info. As you are finding out, there are exhausts and then there are exhausts.

Cheapest is to get the local exhaust guy to do it, we use Exhaust Fix in lilydale, knows his stuff, is very neat in finish. Then there are the kit 3" systems you fit yourself.

At the end of the day you pay for what you get, we have fitted beaudesert and taipan systems as well. It all boils down to the finish you want and how much you want to pay, and the advertising speal that they have.

i have a beaudesert myself.
price is around what you were quoted (with muffler) but i also got a straight through section so i can swap.
beaudesert is fully flanged in factory locations, includes dump with point to put in a pyro.
Kit is great and it fits. no stuffing around, just bolt it in and away you go. will take a few hours (hardest part is the dump pipe) and means you only have the car off the road when it suits you.

Costs more but is proven.

yeah plus it aluminized steel which not many places do in mandril bends unless they have the mandril bending machine.

What sort of increases are you getting with just the exhaust fitted, I heard even only exhaust makes a decent power boost.

exhaust is very little until you get a good dyno tune

for me the exhaust itself had little to no effect.
but sounds good. however, when i removed and plugged the blow-off valve it made a noticeable difference (was able to pull 3rd low on a hill that 30 mins earlier i could just do 2nd low) i imagine the gain wouldn't be as good if i didn't have the pipe. however all this means sweet f-all without a dyno run.

doing this all in prep for some boost/tuning work. This is what will make the real difference and the pipe is just part of it.

nice

So a few people have talked around 90 + rwkw after a 3" and a tune with a little more boost.

Does anyone know the rwkw on a totally stock 4.2TD might be?

Would it be like 75 rwkw?

bout that.. its pretty hideous when you think about the size of the motor with turbo. shows how under powered it rteally is :( .. one afternoon at Andys at Dieseltec and its a new car dude, you wouldnt regret it.

Factory td42t patrols are putting out anywhere between 62 ish to 80 rwkw and anything in between.

Once you have a 3", with boost and fuel adjustments we set non i/c to around 85-90 rwkw and i/c to 90-95.

It transforms the vehicle.

My figures agree with this 100%, anyone quoting over 100 rwkW is either on an innacurate dyno or running way too hot, as I'm sure Andy would know its quite possible to set these up without any increase in exhaust temp.

Ive only had the car a few weeks and tonight I thought id open up the air cleaner box and check the filter and look around it before I order a snorkel.

It had one of the re-usable air filters that had not been cleaned for ages.

It had moths stuck to it and one side had that much dirt I dont know how the engine ran :(

I didnt have a cleaning kit so I washed it our with Turps (was the only thing that removed the oil and dirt) and then sprayed with a little WD40 until I buy a kit for it tomorrow.

I probably just gained 5kw LOL
