steel or alloy bullbar?

G'day

a mate of mine was wondering whats better,

steel or alloy bullbars?
also he was wondering on his silver 4 runner (92') what would look better black or chrome?

your thoughts?

Do you want to put a winch on it?

If you are running IFS (probably) then the extra weight of a steely may not be too great for your front-end.

I am running an allow bar on my Patrol (came with it) but I have a steel cradle for the winch.

Then again a Patrol is not a Hilux...

True yeah its got IFS and probably wont be sticking a winch anytime soon on it.

depends if he wants it for incase type frontal protection or he wants to use it in anger shunting rock ledges etc.

if he wants to do the later i would buy a steel but this is hardly the sort of like the 4 runner it self is suited to:P
alloy usually look neater and are lighter.

i hit a half burried rock on a hill climb with my heavy duty alloy bar, which bent back and crunched the guard... would have been better off with nothing..

I've been involved in a low speed head on collision before. I had a Steel Bar, the other had an Alloy bar. The results spoke for themselves, go steel if you have the choice.

Kangaroos and Alloy dont play well together. I have alloy and its as weak as. Trucks get away with it cos they dont use flimsy alloy like they do on 4b's.

My Paj has a steel bar, was on it when I bought it 7 years ago. For about 6 years it's also had a second battery under the bonnet, and it's still running the original torsion bars. No problems yet.

I wouldn't worry about the weight.

steel 100%.

i wrapped the front end of my 80 around a tree at full acceleration in 2nd gear about 60ks, it wrapped the rhs of the bar around the headlight/guard and bonnet, a little chopping on the bar and rewelding and a new bit of pipe and it was all good (pity about the rest of the 80 but if it was a alloy bar i figure it would have been a writeoff.

Steel.

Alloy is prone to fatigue and might protect for the one big hit because it absorbs energy well, but for lots of little knocks like a 4WD gets it will fatigue and stretch the mounting holes out.

my mates 4runner now runs a steel bullbar with a winch, and he has no suspension probs.

the alloy one he had b4 ended up inside his headlight in a 10kph tap...
