found a shattered spring my lux bell housing.. Pics

Post by brad 93hilux »

On a recient trip to the vic high country i had alot of problems selecting gears, (which i thought was a gearbox problem) but after talking to a gear box reco place found out it was the clutch that had issues.

The clutch is a heavy duty one that i installed 2 years ago and have had alot of problems with shudder (the fly wheel was machined)

This morn i decided to pull the gearbox back off and see what the problem is....

And found this spring shattered and worn inside the bellhousing.

Any one know what the spring is from/ for?
Has me stumped

Looks like part of the clutch plate. Check the springs on the plate?

Looks too small to be a clutch plate spring, unless it has multi-pack springs.

I had the same problem with a spring break in one of my clutch plates too. The bits fell out and jammed it from releasing.

yes the clutch is running twin springs and the clutch springs are worn a little bit but not too bad.

The spring looks like it has been bouncing around it there a bit as it has flat spots and alot of wear marks on it.... the spring (piecs) i found looks alot smaller than the springs in the clutch itself.

This is the clutch and pressure plate

And the flywheel... you can see the burn marks in it and when i had a closer look it had hairline fractures in it...

How about the thrust bearing assembly?

What about the return spring for the clutch fork?

Who did the clutch install last time? Perhaps this is a nasty trick by a mechanic to get more money! (just being objective!)

Other possibility is it was a coincidence that the spring bounced off the road and into the fork hole!!!!!!!!!!!

I installed the clutch last time and don't remember seeing and springs that looked like that...

The only other thing i can think of is the starter motor shi* itself about 6 months ago... I wonder if it came out of that.

it looks like the clutch plate springs has duel springs on 3 of the springs. ie small ones inside the bigger outer one. it looks like the top one is missing the small spring inside it, tho its hard to tell in the pic.

Have another look at the pic up the top of the page... I am finding it hard to believe the spring came out of the clutch itself as if you look closely the spring is small compared to my finger.. :?

But not doubting that thats where it could have come from just Intrigued how it could have come out of inside the other spring...(its not that small)

Yes, multi-pack springs are evident when looking at the picture.

Well i found where the spring came from.... if you have a look in the pic, right in the centre there is a small spring on the left but not on the right...

I have to wonder if this was a manufacturing prob or something that i caused? ;)

Never had a drama with the exedy clutches yet and will be putting one in mine when it blows clutch or box whatever comes first. had one in my torry it didn't have huge power but clutch had plenty of bite 3rd gear drop at 100k's and it'd give a good churp in wet give a good 1st 2nd 3rd easy.
plenty of parts on the bench
