found this when i was looking through old threads for winch bars

using the pic above your post, both have advantages.

The one on the left on darker car protects the car more from branches and getting beaten, the other protects FA...
the one on the right looks good, looking at it wouldnt take much to bend it, like Hillbilly did, and some look agricultural..

its the same as the others, nothign to protect the lights or bonnet or guards, or grill, or other expensive bits..

Having hit a roo and seeing how much damage they do, its worth having the whole bar.

Looks good but yea dont think it would take much to bend the ends or side bits.

the one on the darker car is mass manafactured out of 2.5mm plate and ehxaust tube. the first time it comes down on something at the end it will bend up and break the headlight. I think you would be suprised how weak it would be.
the one on the right has the "wings" braced right back to the mount with tube, and I think you would be suprised how strong it would be...

i can say that the bar is stronger then it looks, it is made form 50x 3.2mm wall tube, an i have had a highlift under the corner of the bar without it bending,
but no it doesnt protect guards and bonnet and that from wildlife.

front bar

Post by davejb »

Bogged I have not had the misfortune to hit a roo, but have seen the results.
My intention was to keep the weight down a bit.
The outside of the bar where it comes around the side of the guard is braced back to chassis and will not bend easily.
Unlike a friends ARB Sahara bar on his 100 series which twisted up far enough to take out the headlight and guard then spring back to its original shape. All that from a low speed bump against an embankment.
Thanks for the comments, thats how this board works so well, we can all learn and improve our rigs from others ideas and experience

I'm sure your much more interested in how her chest sticks out than how little my front bar does.....but here's a photo anyway! :finger:

i think if you look at her chest some more your front bar will stick out some more. :P

this is all my opinion, so like what ever, dude

things to look at when making a bar

1: what is the bar going to do when you hit something at about 40km (most impacts happen around this speed)
is it "the bar" going to do extensive damage to your car, ie chassis, and panels?
is it going to absorb the impact, or is it going to transmit the force down the chassis?
is it going to affect the vehicle manufactures designed in crumple zones?

2: what is the bar made of, and how is it made?
is the bar made of a brittle material that is going to fracture?
is the bar made of a ductile material that is going to bend?
is it made out of formed sheet or plate, or tube?

3: how much does it weigh?

4: does it hinder or help approach angles?

well they are the things i think about when i make bars

i think it was around $150-$200 in materials to make it, or u can buy similar bars through snake racing or overkill i beleive.
