M8...dont write off truck *1 either..
every owner who i have spoken to about the little 2.8 turbo absolutely loves them......and it has also been my observation that the majority of those that bag them out have not owned them either.
True..the bigger 4.2 diesel is a heavier and stronger engine....but is also correspondingly heavier on fuel.
either truck will give you excellent service if looked after properly....serviced regularly and thoroughly...and ....in my research on these two.....last as long as each other if not abused or thrashed.
go for the one that has best service history....is clean and looks the most well looked after....and wotever dollars yu have.
in the end it is your choice ....and if yu have a gut feeling about one or tuther...go for it.
HTH
Cheers Keith

Nuthin is ever the same once I own it !!
GQ
grab the 4.2 cant go wrong
And I reckon the majority of those replacements would be due to incompetence/stupidity/lack of care/maintenence hey.....PGS 4WD wrote:Having replaced engines and gearboxes for customers with 2.8's and never(except through abuse) a TD42, go the TD42!

Bet I,m right on this too..............

Mine uses around 12L/100km. Pretty bloody good...ST391GQ wrote: True..the bigger 4.2 diesel is a heavier and stronger engine....but is also correspondingly heavier on fuel.
But I agree, most people who bash the little 2.8L have never owned one yet alone driven one. YES you need to be on the go pedal a bit mroe than a TD42 but thats easily fixed. The RD28T can be given some decent powerups with not much effort and wont affect reliability (exhaust and dump pipe, intercooler, proper tune)
can get good powerups on the 4.2 as well.Yom wrote:Mine uses around 12L/100km. Pretty bloody good...ST391GQ wrote: True..the bigger 4.2 diesel is a heavier and stronger engine....but is also correspondingly heavier on fuel.
