breaking wheel studs

got a 05' gu ute and have just snapped three wheel studs changing tyres two on one wheel one on the other.just wondering if anyone else has had this happen

it appears common on GU's. Were you using rattle gun? or have you?

seems to happen more with alloy rims.

yeah i always use my rattle gun at home. must admit though i don't always loosen them first manually. my swampers are on steel rims but the roadies are alloy.will suss out that forum aswell.

easier said than done i would then have to buy new rims and tyres i don't know of any 22 " steel rims.but i just finished reading on that forum about it all and i think it is mainly from tightening the shit out of them everytime i change them over .i didn't realise that you can overtighten them .ah well i guess we live and learn

Then get common 16/17's.. plenty round cheap.

Seems to be you need to regularly check their tension... Also some alloys dont have a flat back where it sits against the mounting plate, thus causing issues too..

And any bolt can be over tightened...

Main thing is to scrap the rattle gun. These things wreck studs badly!

There are many instances of GU's snapping studs and throwing wheels off. Nasty stuff when it happens half way around a bend.

I use a torque wrench to 100lb/ft. Yes it might be a sign of obsessive/compulsive disorder but I feel much more at ease knowing the wheel nuts are tightened to their proper torque and that I haven't stretched/stripped studs in the process.

It happens.

Ripped all six out of front passenger side Sunday of October long weekend - 37's on 15x10 steel rims.
Three weeks ago destroyed all six on passenger rear. 35x14.5/15 Thornbirds on 15x10 steel rims.


Front studs wont fit on rear (too short)
Carry six spare rear studs, so that they fit both frnot and rear.

I run steels on the gu and have never had a problem, i use a rattle gun and have swapped the wheels heaps. However i do have some spare nuts in the ashtray just in case.

Dont use the rattle gun, then you might have some drama's.
Or should that be that I should get myself a rattle gun....?

Front studs are something like 38mm long, rear are 47mm long. Something weird like that. Front studs are not long enough for the rear.
Six front studs and nuts cost me $~60.00 (Wagga Nissan)
Twelve rear studs and nuts cost me $147.00 (Myrtleford Nissan)
