Engel - need to lift there game

Post by rodrocket »

been shopping for an Engel fridge & contacted the local Retravision store to see what they could do & was told thet that dont carry them

went back & checked the Engel web site to make sure Retravision was there & sure enough it was there so i called enother branch & was told buy the salesman to go next door to Rays Tent City as they carry them

after going into R.T.C. i was told they dont carry what i wanted & to try the local Repco

needles to say Repco can get them but was quited almost $300 above what Engel list as there Recomended Retail

I have emailed Engel about 1 week ago & am still waiting on a reply

should i persevere with Engel or spend my money elsewere

Trust me - Rays can get whatever you want out of Engel.

Don't take no for an answer - it is just a 'special' customer order.

Engel are great to deal with - I wouldn't be blaming them. It is the retailer's problem from what you have described.

Cheers
Dave.

as previously stated, go to anaconda. i got a quote from them for a 60Ltr combo fridge freezer, fridge slide and insulator bag, and was told $1800.
I went out to the car park to "measure the back of the car to see if it would fit" and rang rays outdoors. they said that "we can come close to that price" and i asked if that was fridge+slide+bag and i was told "no way, that is just for the fridge and the slide"

go to anaconda!

A mate was just quoted about $990 ish for the MT45 from a caravan joint up here in slack creek. ( I Know that wont help you down there :D )
he deals with Ripco daily and they would only cut a small amount off for him :? from the special currenlty running.
Check out a few local caravan supply joints down your way!
cheers

I rekon Engel need to improve their insulation.

Mate's 39ltr works a treat, but its sides are very cool to touch, even on hot days, so to me, that indicates that there is not enough insulation, and it could be improved.

All reports ive read on engels running in heat over 35, is that they pretty much cycle 90 to 100%.

With mates 39ltr, we are going to wrap it in 1" foam and see if it can reduce the cycle time of the compressor, specially in hotter weather.
If it gives us a good result, we will let you know.

I still think the ultimate fridge would be an evakool type esky insulation with the engel running gear that........."could be repaired, not replaced as an entire unit".

OR the ABR units that have a danfos type, that has very low current draw when it first starts, instead of the usual high requirements of the danfos to start cycling.

you dont ask for much do you

35degrees is fairly hot and a bit of an ask to keep stuff at 0degrees or whatever u set it at.

a insulated bag helps a fair bit with it.
also make sure the vents are well clear of anything and it will help also.

unfortunately when i pack my GU there is no room for it to get any air except from the top so it does tend to get a bit warm and the compressor gets to work a fair bit too

I've also been away with people who have had engels $hit themselves on trips. Some only twelve months old. If you get a lemon, you get a lemon. I own an engel and love it and wouldn't swap it for anything. I have a mate with a 50 litre waeco who has had it for about 5 - 7 years and is still going strong and has never missed a beat. I honestly believe a lot of the problems people have with fridges can be attributed to poor power supply and inadequate power sockets.

I dont think that 35deg is that hot, as most of these units are placed in the rear of a vehicle, sometimes covered, sometimes not.
Internal vehicle temps can easily reach into the 80's if its left closed up and in the sun.
Internal running temp of -10 is more than acceptable if you are using it as a freezer.

When you compare the evakool with the engel, as a freezer, the temps are far lower in the evakool, and cycle time is less.
39/40ltr engel vs 47lt fridge freezer.

From what I can gather from the information I have looked at, the engel does indeed have a lower amp/hr draw when running, and lower start up demands, compared to the evakool, however, if you leave an engel off for 5 hrs on a 35+ day, the internal temp does indeed rise more than the evakool.

This leads me to the conclusion that the insulation is lacking, and if it could be improved, I think engel would be onto a real winner and could really push good amp/hr figures in its sales point.
However at the moment, it just cant keep up with a better insulated unit.

Yes I understand that the engel compressor does not have the capacity to rapidly chill down like the bd35 danfos, and as the refridgerant temp increases in hot weather, the efficiency of moving refridgerant around does drop as well, however it does work well, and is economical in doing so.

Have any of the engel owners covered their units with foam, or other effective coverings, beyond just the cover that is offered, and what results did you achieve??

Cheers
