Extended diff breathers - extra info
G'day,
Just searched and found out how to extend my diff breathers, however just a few things that i couldn't find:
What size ID hose do i use?
What kind of hose do i use?
What kind of filters do i use?
Thanks in advance
Cheers,
Sean

hi all you need is a fuel hose and filters
someone is selling them in a kit on ebay
but just go to super cheap and get all of it for stuff all
and maybe a small hose clamp to hold them on

Location: stuck in a hole. not offroad, just deception bay
if you want it to look real neat get a 1/8" bsp tapered tap, pull the breather cap off and the inside diameter of the breather is spot on the right size to tap a thread into it, no need to drill. after tapping out the thread you will need to drain the oil and blow a bit of compressed air through the breather hole to remove any filings from inside the diff. then you can get a brass hosetail (straigh or 90 degree, i used straight) then you can use smaller diameter hose then fuel/garden hose. i used 1/8" vacuum hose as that is not going to restrict the breather at all, and is not big and bulky
and at the top end i used another hosetail threaded into an air line silencer. (a brass bubbly breather fitting). again not as bulky as a fuel filter.
not sure how much this would all cost as i was working at enzed at the time and got it all for bugger all ! ! but its easy enough to do.[/img]

yeah those E-bay ones look all Pro but $92 Bucks
OPTION 1::
go to bunnings Buy some Clear plastic hose 12mm inner
some hose clamps, (Bling it up and buy some annadised ones if you want
And if you want to trick it up a little buy some T piece hose fittings so you can run them into each other to tidy up your engine bay
(instead of having 4 hoses run them into one!)
and buy the old style Rocker cover Filter
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Redline-Engine-R ... dZViewItem
and attach (if you want?) a one way valve to stop any water entering your lines
OPTION 2::
"As above with Bunnings"
Plumb it back into your air intake, say if you have a snorkel?
go to a plumbing suplier and ask if they have a taping band that will fit your need(or just goop it up with some silocone.
This way you know that NO water will ever enter your essential Driveline Breathers Even if you cross a deep watercrossing or submerge your self unwitingly
Hope this helps

I hate going to weddings because all the grandma's used to poke me in the ribs saying you're next, you're next. They've stopped doing it since I started doing it to them at funerals.
Dunno if I'd put the hoses in the snorkel.. If anything, you want slight pressure in the diffs NOT a vaccuum.... especially when you enter water.Danzo wrote: .................Plumb it back into your air intake, say if you have a snorkel?..................
Maybe run another hose along outside of snorkel would work OK.
I don't have a snorkel so I have the breathers mounted at the top of the firewall.
yeah mine are just mounted at the high point in the engine bay aswell, but when I get a snorkel I was going to plumb them in, but now you got me thinking,, I might just run the one clear pipe up beside itwant33s wrote:Dunno if I'd put the hoses in the snorkel.. I am using clear pipe for 2 reasons.
1: I can see if anything is going into the pipes easy maintenance
2: if I role over or if the oil is burning and starting to smoke, for some reason?

Don't use fuel line or any of the other hoses , think about it , you want to spend f_ck all on the diff breathers and expect them to protect your most valuable asset. Fuel line can not handle oil , it will swell up and not allow any air to pass , you need transmission oil cooler line , 5/16 , this will last the lifetime of the car , most decent spare parts shops sell them , they also sell 5/16 straight and 90 degree brass fittings which have a 1/8 bsp fitting , Cheers Paul.
BLOWNZUK 1.3 efi,sc14 supercharger,hilux diffs,detroit lockers,stage 4 rockhopper,6 point cage,35 muddies.
Ok so from what people have said i need to get a transmission oil cooler line with an ID of 5/16's
And just find some little fuel filters.
And i also need 1 straight and 1 90 degree brass fittings per diff.
Tanks everyone, will be getting it all tmrw
Cheers,
Sean

I've just pulled out the centre caps off the breathers and got 10mm internal diameter vaccum line from the diffs transfer and g'box all hoseclamped cabletied up to the engine bay near the battery out of harms way. cheap and easy. The transfer and gearbox are abit of a pain without body lift but. Which i did with no bodylift
I am Tim
I have used plenty of fuel line for diff breathers and it's been fine, but that doesn't mean that Mart isn't correct
However, clear pvc tube, garden hose etc etc etc etc WILL fail. The heat, oil and oil vapour and flexing from the suspension will make it brittle and it will split.
Yes, it is much cheaper to use these lower quality products, but they will need constant checking to ensure they are still serviceable.
A diff breather with a split hose on it is actually worse than the stock breather with the cap on it.
Steve.
