Been to a couple of auto elecs lately to ask about 24v alts to hang off the front of my pootrol.
Both didnt have much of an idea what would suit my purpose the best.
This is for the guys in the winch challenge scene. What model alternators are you guys using to charge your secondary 24v electical systems?
What Amp output would be best for running the winch, spotlights and compressor. Thats about all i would run off 24v!
much appreciated
steve

Bosch 24v alts
Moderator: -Scott-
I actuall use a 70amp Delco unit that I bought off the shelf from Repco in NZ. It is a very very common alternator which was the point as easy to get parts etc. That is charging twin 21 plate sealed batteries that are about 3kgs heavier than the biggest Odessay Battery with a lot less CCA but still have 800 (which is more than enough) and a 240 min reserve. This is for running my winch only as I've converted everything else to 12v. The truck was 24v to start with.
For the past few years I was using the standard Patrol 24v alt. ie 35amp that was charging twin 925cca 180min reserve batteries. I was only using a sin gle 7.8hp 24v winch motor but the only time I had power supply issues was when the alt got full of mud and stopped charging, which happens way to often over here!
I have only done one low key comp with the new setup so it hasn't really been tested yet.

93 Nissan Pathfinder / Terrano Turboed VH45, GQ Trans and T-case, coil overs, hydraulic winch and fair bit of other stuff. (Currently a pile of parts in the workshop)
The 70 I have is a lot bigger than the 110amp 12v I run so yeah size is a problem, but you have to look at the advantage. If I could have gotten a common, bigger alt, at a good price then I would have done it. Rememer that power drop is what kills your motor's.
A simple case of bigger is better, but if it is an issue with budget then I'd go with the smaller one and ensure better batteries and better cable. The 95mm welding cable is essential!

Here is a pic on ebay of a Delco unit! 105A output wich would be great but id say pysical size of the unit would be large!
