ENGINE SWAPS FOR GQ

Post by Red Rover »

I know I have been looking at fitting a supercharger I have to the petrol 6, but are there any other motors that fit besides the 5ltr holden. Just curious thats all i.e any thing out of Japan in their big 6 or 8 cyl. I have heard that a 4.5 six will fit - about $4500 for the engine plus aftermarket computer. Just looking at all options.

Thanks

Kyle has one in his shorty.. its in the forsale section..

Anyother motors, theres 1000's of them... Depends on what you want it for in the end.. some are more suited to other things ..

Certainly do have me one of them.... .awesome motor.....

Other options are RB30ET (VL Turbo), Holden V8, Chev TPI V8, what about a GEN III or the new Ford Boss motor. Or XR6 T...... list goes on, anything can fit...... what about Anthony Kilners (4WD Monthly) new toy, injected big block.....

Hope you got a nice big healthy budget........

They definately go hard, haven't had mine on the dyno yet as I haven't got a fuel pump big enough on it yet. But its neck and neck with GenIII commodores through 1st and 2nd, then wind resistance pretty much kills the GQ!

Mine is hooked up the standard GQ Manual with a custom made bellhousing. Required both gearbox and motor to be mounted forward 4".

yep, he's getting close, motor runs and gets oil pressure. He just has to wire up the gearbox and off it goes..
Bloody tight fit with the turbos in there, they sit pretty much in the wheel wells.

Even when it is going its will be a nightmare to drive! GQ's just aren't designed to take that much power!!!!!

I like the idea of a vh45 with an auto, mounted as far forwards in the engine bay as possible then fit twin transfer cases. Kyle would there be room for this or is it a bit tight up the front.

Heaps of room! Even with the motor brought forward 4" there is still a good 10-12" of space between the motor and radiator. Feel free to come have a look any time.....

Great idea, never even considered twin transfers.........

theres MILES of room, I didnt realise it was moved 4inchs forward!!! IT actually looks odd with that much space in there.

Since they are a grey import donk (arent they?) how are they for parts Kyle?? Nissan or .....

Yeah they are a grey import, but being a Nissan, many parts the same as local models, for example the oil filter is the same as a pulsar i think.

With any major parts (head etc) it would almost be more economical to pull the motor and replace with another. You're looking at around 2-2.5k for a whole new motor, why would you bother with any major mechanical works.

And all the ancillaries like power steering and alternator are not the Infinity items anyway, they are from locally delivered vehicles.

Only diesel motors are expensive!!! Thats the going rate, untill they start getting popular that is.....

Realistically what mechanical parts are you likely to ever need, the only thing I can think of would be a water pump. These may be the same at 300ZX (As the motor is basically a 300ZX V6 with a couple of extra cylinders), or you could order one from Nissan as a spare.

kyle is right, there is fuk all you would need to worry about. the inside of these things are basically race-prepped from the factory, de-burred, everything honed, ultra reliable. all the ancilary shit is out-sourced anyway, so will be the same as some other car somewhere...

the idea would be to do your home work, and find out what parts are the same as some thing else locally delivered, so you know what to ask for at the spare parts desk. that goes the same for all the isuzu mu owners. find out which parts are jackaroo, or rodeo parts, and ask for them. dont mention that it is for a mu. or infinity. if you match the part on another car, get the vin number, and keep it, or at least the month and year of manufacture.

the motor will not break bogged. they are well built, and very reliable. the one of hazards is heaps sick, id way rather have close on 600hp than 200hp, although it would run into reliability issues.

More thinking of basic things, not things like pistons etc.. things like belts, gaskets, waterpumps housings, etc..

There is only one belt and its a locally available custom length one anyway, which I keep a spare in the car.

Gaskets? What are they? Goo is good....... Except for head gaskets but less likely to do one of them with all alloy.

Waterpump, as I mentioned earlier, possibly a good spare to track down and keep on hand.......

MMMMM - might have to wait and see if marks adaptors comes out with a kit - but i won't hold my breath. Sounds like a very difficult conversion - and i've put a v8 into an mq before! PITY. I thought the original auto off the 4.5 motor with a remote transfer case might have been the go, providing there is a remote case to suit the rear centre diff

the auto that goes behind that v8 in the infinit is the same as the patrol auto apart form the output housing and shaft

So the auto of the 4.5 v8 is the same as tb42 or tb45? Given the v pattern is the reason it has to be moved forward to clear the firewall?
