1988 was the change-over year, xN60/61/62/63 or LN130 shape
Th VR motor is the go, but we need to know what options you will end up with, auto, manual, straight LPG or Petrol or dual fuel?
Also if you plan to keep the car for 2-3 years, it's not worth the conversion. It's a 10 year commitment to a car I reckon, like mine has been 12 years so far.
Also I must warn you, An example if you sell it soon after the conversion - I bought a converted Surf for $9K 6 months after conversion. It cost the guy $11K to do it plus what he bought the car for just before that!

G'day all, first post here.
My guess is Knos has a YN65 as he has quoted a 2.4 diesel and not a 2.8.
To quickly answer some of your questions.
1/ Costs involved? Up to $10,000 depending on how professional, technical and outsourced you want it to be. Is it worth it? Hell yes.
2/ What motor? I've got a VP V6 mated to a T700 auto box in my 1988 Xtra cab and that's fine. But now looking at it with hindsight. For a few hundred dollars more I could have had an Ecotec V6 which equals 30 or so more kilowatts. And then again, there are times when I want to junk it all for a 5lt V8. More power the better.
Hope this helps.

thanks mate helps yep got the ln65, yeah 10k is pretty pricey dunno what im going to do.. hmmm
As for older carby V8's into your 88 Hilux, just be careful and check with Vicroads first. I remember a conversation where it was said anything built after Jan86 must have an EFi transplant. Also the rule of thumb is engine going in cannot be older than the vehicle it's going into to.
But in saying that I don't know what they'd say if you had for example an older 350 Chev running on straight gas.
Not using Efi in a conversion will cut your costs by a third.
Cheers.

knos,
Your best option, if the car is excellent and as stated, is to find a 3L motor out of a Hilux.

You were correct, but the 2.4 diesel came in the Surf until at least 1993 or later.rynoki wrote:G'day all, first post here.

I bought a whole 84 extra cab hilux with a VP V6 in it for 4Gs
Also might know where you can get a brand new marks 4x4 auto to transfer adaptor and wiring loom from cheap ... me! PM me if you are interested. I have all the bits sitting here that I bought before I found a Hilux allready converted for sale.
If you can do a bit your self it wont cost anywhere near that sort of coin.
A motor and box can be had for $500 if you look around.
But as said it always cost more than you think for the little stuff.
Paul.

ey man
i have a 86 lux and i put a 253 in it using marks 4wd adapters.
i have upgraded to a 308 just a few weeks ago and it goes really well for very little effort.
The thing you have to look at with the v6's and the new v8's is all the wiring looms. Because of the coil packs, the fuel injection and all the sensors that make it run all the wiring conversions make it expensive to do.
If you go for a older v8 (non efi) then you can get away with it heaps cheaper and most of the wiring connects back to the original loom's. Plus it just needs fuel and air to run none of the hassles of sensors.
just something to think about
