Done a search but cant find any info on the power figures between the two.
Can anyone tell me how a MQ SWB patrol 3.3D performs compared to a 4.2D? Is a 4.2D a better option?

3.3 vs 4.2 diesel??
here is a bit of info i could scrape up on the SD33 engine and the TD42 engine

Max Power: 70Kw @ 3600RPM
Max Torque: 217nm @ 1800RPM
SD33T
Max Power: 81Kw @ 4000RPM
Max Torque: 255nm @ 2000RPM
TD42
Max Power: 85Kw @ 4000RPM
Max Torque: 264nm @ 2000RPM
TD42T
Max Power: 102Kw @ 4000RPM
Max Torque: 312nm @ 2200RMM
Not sure if the TD42T specs are right as i got them from a guy at the diesel shop. the rest are pretty spot on
the SD33T is the better option of the old 3.3L engines but even in its Turbo state it doesn't beat the TD42 engine.

The sd33 is a great motor, - ive got an sd33 NA and a td42 NA, i'd say that the sd can be a little harder to start when cold but once warm its easily as good as the td, both very reliable - inline injector pump on the sd is probably more bush mechanic fixable and stationary motor like than the rotary pump on the td.
At the end of the day it depends what you're putting it in - ie you wouldn't bother trying to put a td into an mq, would be far better off turboing the sd.
So at the end of the day they're both super reliable and the only real differences that matter are sd33 inline pump, less capacity, td42 rotary pump more capacity, they both take around 10 litres of oil and the sd has one big filter and the td has 2 smaller ones.
As far as performance goes the gq lwb td42n/a (93DX) goes a tiny bit better than an mq swb sd33n/a not much in it tho considering the mq has 300k and the gq has 150k on it, also the mq in stock form has better off road gearing and a slicker drivetrain than the gq - however the gq is better for highway use

Just my 2 cents worth here...
I've got an SD33 MQ wagon - has a bit over 750,000km on it. Compression is average, but still goes great, and feels like it works a bit better at higher revs compared to the SD33T.
I've had an MK ute and wagon with SD33T's (ute had a fresh motor 50,000km, the wagon had an imported jap motor with 100,000km on it). Nothing special in stock form, but i had a 3" mandrel bent exh. put on the ute which made it spool up a bit earlier and rev a bit more freely. I was running 37" claws on it, and was great cause it was a bit lighter than the wagon. The wagon had a 2.5" mandrell bent exh. and aslo had the pump adjusted i bit (done in a workshop, not my backyard....). The wagon was an awesome tourer, great on fuel, towed like a real champ too!! I had 33" Mongrels on it, and the only issues i had were that it tended to lack a bit on the longer hills, and was really only "usefull" when you revved it over 2500 rpm (only just kept up with the 2.8 hilux's, but was a hell of alot more comfy!!). However, this could have been rectified with more boost, more fuel, intercooler etc. (I should never have sold it!!!)
I've just bought a TD42 GQ wagon and driven in 1300km back home. Its dead stock, just ticked over 200,000km and has 33" muddies. It sat on 115km/h the whole way back with only 3 changes back to 4th needed (not needed, but i did anyway....). I got 12L/100km with a motor that was overdue for a service, didn't blow any soot, and used bugger all oil. The truck has great torque (i dont use 1st gear), good power spread and will rev if you want it to.
So in a nutshell, i reckon the SD33 based motors are an awesome thing, but now that i own/drive a TD42, i'll have to say that i'm a bit biased to the 4.2. They anlo offer quite a bit more for modifying - i've seen some bloody fast TD42 turbos around !!Plus, you get a free set of coils in the GQ Patrols too!!
