Mazda V6? Timing belt snapped 4km after i bought the car :(
hey guys,
ok, this vehicle is not a 4wd, HOWEVER i am lead to believe this engine is common in a few other mazdas, incl the MPV or whatever its called.
so, my story:
unlucky day, bought myself a daily crapper to use in melb cos im selling my black supra and white soarer and wanted something comfy and reliable that i wont lose my license in so i grabbed a mazda 929 top of the range with all the goodies (sunroof, ps, pw, auto, 3.0 v6, power mirrors, heaps of room inside, mp3 player, etc etc).. nice car.. til i drove FOUR KMS from the womans house and the timing belt gave out...
and in typical tradition of my life.. pictures follow:
nice interior, shame it doesnt drive
im sure ive seen this scenario too many times to count:
and in the shop.. yay, only hours after buying it:
anyone ever busted a timing belt in a 92-99 mazda 929 V6 3.0?
Ive read a lot of posts on the net about how in haynes manuals and gates timing belt catalogues are incorrect saying they are interference motors, however i was hoping someone had direct evidence and had their own belt snap on a mazda v6 motor.
since its next to impossible to tell if the valves belt without pulling the motor apart im well.. kinda not wanting to put a new timing belt on it only to find the motor is toast
any input greatly appreciated.
thanks pplz

in case any was interested, i have made some progress, i found the following info from mazdaworld forums, it might be of interest to others with mazda engines.
** Apparently, according to mazdas info the engine i have is 'recommended to be checked' following timing belt breakage.
eg:
LEGEND:
Yes = Check for possible damage to piston(s) or valve(s)
if there has been a timing belt failure.
No = Manufacturer does not recommend piston or valve
inspection in the event of a timing belt failure.
3.0L V6 (929 Models) ....... change @ 96,000 ................. Yes, check
3.0L V6 .................... change @ 96,000 ................. No, fine
** Several users claimed they just replaced it and it was fine. Including one stating that he was doing 80kph, broke it, and fixed with no worries.
** Supposedly its commonly caused by leaking front seals (i peeked at my belt - its soaked)
I have found workshop manual as well if anyone else needed it.
Well tomorrow i will order oil seal, timing belt and water pump while im at it and fix it - with any luck itll be fine.. I assume you need a comp test to "check" valves are not broken?
Thanks, any info is still appreciated

for anyone interested:
well its mostly back together, i got the thing to start, no crazy noises but seems to have a bit of 'tappet' noise, ill see how it runs when its back together properly, i only test put it together and made it start. Was a pain in the arse since the manual mis-pictures one of the pulleys which throws the timing out around 90 degrees, so after a major freakout when the car had no comp, i detected the prob and sorted it (some 3 hrs later). Also a shop supplied me the wrong crank oil seal, so it wound up at a stop around 2am this morning. Tomorrow should see real results... hmm
not a great pic, but stil captures the rather windy weathered moment lol. Im sure people love having dates on the side of a busy highway

replaced timing belt, seals, spark plugs, oil, oil filter and it purrs now. No problem..
was a little worried there for a bit
sweet ride indeed
if anyone else does similar to their motor, dont let mechanics tell you the engine will definately be screwed, ive had a few tell me that, if i hadnt done it myself i can bet id have copped a massive bill for a head rebuild.

Why are you posting this dribble on here???????????? WTF?
Go to www.mazdabator.com
Your wasting your time and mine.
Yeah i know i don't have to look at it but i'd rather not come across it here in the first place.

err, cos as i said 'mazda v6', 'also used in mazda 4wds', and 'might help other people', in the section 'other makes'. From what i can see, it was a fair and pretty reasonable question, and i posted my results and personal findings in an effort to help anyone else.GT60 wrote:[img]

I'm sorry i clogged this very very busy section of the forum and inconvenienced you, and yeah i am wasting my time posting my results and findings, but for shame - i hope i didnt actually post anything 'useful' to anyone that has a similar issue in future with their mazda 4wd v6.
sheesh.

If i was a mod i would delete it in the name of bad taste!
u need some new material. this is the second time you have used the same picture in my threads. your own hand perhaps?
as i said, at least following my discovery, i was making an effort to be constructive and helpful to other ppl that might have similar problems with their v6 mazdas. you do realise mazda made v6 4wds dont you? a few different ones actually, some of which use the same motor. As i said, this section isnt exactly clogged up, so i dont really see the harm done.
just as well you arent a mod, cos OH MY, id be devastated if i couldnt post to your satisfaction and make you appreciated anything i felt like saying. Damn, i have the wrong direction in life.

I'm so Hilux focused, nothing else is needed, so I didn't give it a second thought? I have heard the name Mazda though!want33s wrote:Mazda... 4WD... Really?....Since when? Can't say I've EVER seen one in the bush...... No. You must be having a lend of us.
There isn't even a Mazda section on Outers!

lol, well this is why its in 'other makes'.. Lada make 4wds, they dont have a sectionwant33s wrote:Mazda... 4WD... Really?....Since when? Can't say I've EVER seen one in the bush...... No. You must be having a lend of us.

Mazda MPV V6 3.0
Mazda Tribute V6 3.0
Mazda CX7
Mazda CX9
Mazda Bravo 4x4 ( though not v6 afaik)
all are 'soft roaders', and i think they use the same basis of engine.
Still the general rule of thumb i was getting at was that dont necessarily take the mechanics word for it that snapped belt = toasted motor, this is the second engine ive snapped a belt on (actually my supra broke its oil pulley, making timing belt loose - replaced both and it was perfectly fine), and both times ive been told 'your engine will be &^*% by 'qualified mechanics', and both times its been fine. If i hadnt done the fix myself id have prob believed the mechanic who would have just reco'd the head, charged another few grand and never mentioned that the valves werent bent after all.
So, just a friendly hint to check it yourself, or be there when they pull the head off.

I think the point here is.. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BUYING... ONLY BUY A VEHICLE WITH A PROVEN SERVICE HISTORY IF YOU DON'T WANT IT BREAKING ON THE DRIVE HOMEWTF wrote:

A 40,000km timing belt will last up to 80,000km. I've seen lots of them way past their use by date still working fine..
Sounds like you bought a car that had never had the belt changed. God only knows what other bits have been ignored too.
Good luck with it...
PS: Lada haven't made or sold a 4wd for over 20 years!
"Soft-roader"??? Oh yeah I get it now... 'Gravel driveway'
