welding brackets on fuel tank

I want to lift my long range tank about 30mm in my 80s

2 brackets can be re used with the addition of block spacers but the bracket at the front needs to be cut and modded as it mounts under the chassis rail.

My question is if i keep the cutting and welding strictly to the bracket and not directly on the tank I should come out of it alive

Any ideas - it has been mentions through my searches on this topic to het the tank acid dipped but I have no need to actually go cutting into the tank itself.

Maybe fill the tank with water. Its the vapour thats dangerous, if the tanks FULL of water theres no room for vapour. An empty tank is more dangerous than a full one.

What you do is start grinding and cutting around the tank then do some welding.

Take out private health and life insurance plus accidental dental first cause you'll probably need one or the other after she blows you to kingdom cum, providing it's petrol that is.

Oh and don't forget ambulance membership

remove tank from the car, then empty the tank fill it with soapy water and then purge the tank with argon, while ur welding also have the argon flowing into the tank, could also use c02 if you have that on hand.

I welded up a hole in a mates tank. We washed it out with water as good as we could 5 times, then filled it with water right to the brim, I then stood back as far as I could and threw a match into the water two or three times. Nothing happend, so after all that I thought it was hopefully safe to weld and I didn't have any problems.

A big explosion is always in the back of your mind though.

I whimped out

When i had a similar problem on my old 45 I had some brackets made up to fit the tank into place, happily weld the brackets (away from source of big bang) then bolt to the tank then bolt into place.

just fill to the tank to the top of the filler neck
THE VERY TOP!!
then get a damp rag (damp from water)
and dont put the cap on
then cut or weld as much as you need to if it ends up on fire
just hold the rag over the filler hole and the fire will go out
my pop did this in his old panel shop the rest of the workers ran like hell

All the above ways will work fine.
The safest way would be take it to a paint stripping joint have it dipped this removes all fumes and oily residue. making 100% safe to weld too. grease free too which will assist in your welding.

u can also fill the tank with exhaust gas whilst theres no oxygen there will be no fire at work we always use argon but for a backyard job exhaust will be fine
