any ideas people?? only just started to do it

Post by meece4x4 »

My Feroza has suddenly started to fume badly inside the cabin when topless, (i dont have the hardtop on mine rather a custom made softtop, up untill about a week ago eveything was fine now Im noticing quite a strong smell of "burnt oil smoke" in the cab (even with just the windows down it's noticable) Im losing a small amount of oil too, checked for leaks etc none that are noticable and there is no sign of smoke of any colour out the tailpipe.

the fuming gets worse when I back off the accelerator IE going down a long hill.... was thinking valve guides but there isnt the big puff of blue smoke when you floor it at the bottom of the hill you normally tend to get with worn guides ?? !! ??
checked for exhaust leaks but, 1, except the manifold the whole system is less than 2 months old and 2 with 75 db's @ 2000rpm it's so frigging loud you wouldnt tell if you had a leak anyway

is there a valve (like that sodding idle valve in Zooks) that blockup/playup that causes the normal amount of blowby to not get recycled into the injector intake? or could it just be that the guides are getting worn? if so how hard are they to replace?

cheers Meece

No Feroza's don't have a PCV valve. You sure one of the two ventilation hoses hasn't come adrift ?

The little darlings have a habit of leaking out the distributor seal, it hard to see but I wouldn't think it would get onto the exhaust. Rocker cover gaskets also get hard and begin weeping.

Transfer case output seals also can leak, and they do fling oil around but transmission oil smells different and why that would be affected by downhills is beyond me.

As for stem seals, you might be able to do the old "use compressed air to hold the valves closed whilst compressing the springs trick" but I don't like your chances. Pity head gaskets are expensive.

Have you considered just swapping the head ( assuming it is valves ) ? An Applause head costs me around $60 complete but I have to remove it.
( usual disclaimers )

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

my old workvan 2004 toyota hiace did the same thing. But only after being at toyota for a service (put it down to the cheap crud oil they used).
Whenever it got fumey id change the oil with something good and it would go away.
this went on from brand new up until i got rid off it 30000kms.

hey you might be onto something there, Id topped it up with cheap supercheap oil last time the level got low .. that was about a week ago ... about the same time it started smelling worse ... hmmmm :D

Thanks for that MM I have checked all the pipes that I can find they are getting a little hard but no sign of cracks etc, I think Dai-hard might be onto something with the quality of oil thing ... I have noticed that it smells a lot stronger since topping it up with the cheap crap..... time for a another service methinks

Was quoted $40NZ for a head gasket from Repco .. not too bad a price, Daihatsu parts are generally cheap over here because there is little market for them anything on the shelves at Repco etc has been sitting there a while and you can usaually get them to drop a fair percentage off the retail price :D

Didnt really want to dive into doing too much to the motor at this point in time as it's coming up on 180K was hoping to get another 20K out of it then pull it out and give the whole motor a once over.

Daihatsu Appluases are rarer than Feroza's in New Zealand, they wernt a very popular import.. I think I have seen maybe 3 or 4 in total.
