Rear Axle Leakage?
Moderator: Tiny
Rear Axle Leakage?
Anyone had axle oil leaking out of the hub?
My wheel seems to have some sort of oil on it and I've cleaned it off but it came back.
If there's axle oil coming out, this would most likely be leaking in through the drum as well wouldn't it?
Also, the manual on warfs that I got seems to be missing pages 5-9 of the rear axle section, is that just mine or all of them?
Any comments on this would be fantastic.
I've rebuilt the front hubs and swivel hubs already... Is the rear any worse than that?

Rear seal is easy to change, do the bearing while your at it and may as well do both sides. You'll want a length of steel pipe a bit bigger than the axle but smaller than the bearing to help 'push' (hammer) it back on.
In the mean time check your diff oil and top up if need be. Don't want to have to rebuild the diff.
BTW, how hard was it to do the fronts on yours? Are there 2 seals or just the one? Mines leaking something chronic on the left front atm, never pulled the front apart only the rear and the front looks a lot more complicated.

I assume I pretty much get the drum off and the seal is next?
Well I managed to get her done! Took me a couple of days because I only got a couple of hours in and I kept having to go to get parts or tools or something. They guy before me had the wrong swivel bearings in there which became quite difficult to remove.
Um, there were a few seals. There was 3 I think. one big one at the back of the ball, one wheel bearing seal and one axle seal... got it all in a set from ABC Bearings here in sydney.
And just bought the wheel bearings seperately.
Just chucked a fair load of grease in there, the left looks like the grease could be coming out the back but not as bad as it was before I rebuilt it. Possible I put too much grease in there or tightened something up too much or that seal didnt seal properly, i dont know but it's not too bad.
Where's your grease coming from?

Ha ha,
No one seems to know a proper name for it BUT I think the manual had a name. ha ha, actually it refers to it as "the outer spherical section" in one part.
I always just called it the ball joint. The whole thing is called the steering knuckle, i worked that out eventually.
Um, if there's a heap of oil coming out then your axle seal must be pretty gone!
Get yourself a kit... Forget what its called but basically a steering knuckle seal kit or something, should come with the 3 seals I mentioned, as well as the upper and lower swivel bearings.
I have photo's of the stuff i did somewhere if you're interested. But yeah, I managed to get it done so my guess is you'll do it in half the time. I found that some of the bolts were pretty weak putting them back in... After one of them stretched. So i ended up replacing a lot of bolts.
Ah, did I miss anything?

Kool. Doesn't sound that hard now. I've got a whole spare front diff here so if i need to replace bolts I 'should' be ok.
I say a 'heap' of oil but its prolly less than 100ml, just spreads out real easily.
Just can't afford to have it half done and then have something go wrong, need to drive 50 od k's to work each day

If you just get into it and get it done it really shouldnt take too long, provided you have what you need and dont find out you have issues or anything like that.
As with the rear you might want to do your wheel bearings at the same time but you also may have done them recently, i dont know.
From memory it took me a total of 4 days but 2 of them I was working and just did a little work on it after hours and one of them it rained and the car was outside as I have no garage space. Or had no garage space... Sorted out a bit of a workshop now
Should be able to get it done in a day, definitely get the bum side done anyways then get the other done on your next day off!

If you have diff oil coming out around a rear brake drum, and ending up around inside the rear wheel, the rear seal is gone. It also means the bearing has had it as well. You cannot replace the seal without replacing the bearing retainer, so you may as well change the bearing, even if it is still OK, which it wont be. You need to do it pretty soon, as by now, your brake drum and shoes are caked in oily mud, and not provding any stopping power at all.
There is a How To guide in the Daihatsu FAQ section at the top of the Daihatsu forum. Unfortunately, with no pics on OL any more, a lot of the How To has lost its substance, but there is still enough to guide you.
You need the rear wheel kit, seal, bearing and retainer, and also get the inner axle seal and replace it at the same time. Tools needed are 14mm spanner, 10mm open ended spanner, angle grinder, cold chisel, hammer, and aforementioned length of pipe.
