I'm building a 1.6 block and have a choice of two 1.3 heads to use. One is off a 1298cm3.. the other is off a 1324cm3.
They look the same to me. Can anyone tell me if there are any differences and if so which would be better to use on a 1.6(8V) block?

I think the difference is in the pistons of the two different engines. Ones a dome piston ones flat top...
I do know that coily heads have a different timing pulley, because my WT is running a coily head, both engines were 1298cc, but the WT is square tooth timing, and the coily is rounded. The pulleys are a straight swap.

The cylinder heads are identical , it doesnt matter which one you use.
The difference between a 1298cc and 1324cc is in the crank , the pistons are identical in both engines (except gti which has 4 flycuts), the crank on the 1298cc engine has a stroke of 2.97 inches and a bore of 74 mm , the 1324 has a 3.03 inch stroke and a 74mm bore. You can visually identify the different cranks by the snout that the crank sprocket fits onto.
Regarding the cylinder head , there is no difference in flow in either the one off the 1324 or the 1298 BUT , iirc , there was a slight difference in the way a particular head was cast that was marked "S3" that made it a better head for extreme port work . There was also a slight difference in the length of the cam follower on the rockers , but this is trivial as the extra surface area is never used on the longer follower.
If you are interested i have a reprofiled camshaft (dont ask me the specs , but i believe it has an extra 1mm lift , i havent measured it yet ) also a set of chromed rocker cover , water pump pulley and crank pulley for sale for $200 the lot.

if the vehicle is used for off road use keep with the standard 1.3 cam better bottom end.
Use the vitara 8 valve cam belt and sprockets. it gets too messy using the efi belts and gears when it comes to lining up alternators and waterpump pully.

But all single overhead cam 1.3 engines list the same piston part number regardless , also cams can be reprofiled to make power at various places in the rev range , its like on the twin cam engines with vernier timing gears , you can increase or decrease valve overlap to make your power at different places of the rev range , but with a single cam you dont have that luxury , so reprofiling the cam can be done to make power in low , mid , or top end of the rev range.scooby_74 wrote:1324 or 1298 heads much the same

I do agree with you about using the 1.6 8 valve timing sprockets though making life easier.
why don't you go a GTI DOHC head with injection? Have you read this article on autospeed?

I got a running 1.3 with gearbox and TBI incl ECM and laptop for $400.
I got a 1.6 bottom end for $100.
DOHC is just more money, I don't think the Zook needs it.
A brand new 1.3 would probably do me but I found a 1.6 bottom end at the right price so thats what I'm using just for that bit more torque.
I'm doing the same thing. 1.3 head on a rebuilt 1.6MPFI bottom end using the 1.6 TBI and a megasquirt. Problem is finding the TBI and inlet manifold. I can get a GTI motor cheaply and easily. Any idea if the GTI MPFI head + 1.6 bottom end will be too high and need a body lift?
