Jap and aussie prado rear diffs - same??

Post by carrot »

1. Does a 95 series prado have the same rear diff as a 90 series (Japanese) Prado? I can get a factory electric rear locker from a Jap prado, but I just want to make sure it'll fit in my Aussie prado.

2. What's my diff ratio? The trans/axle code is A343F A02A. (I couldn't find it in the 'bible.')

3. Do you know if my ring gear would mount on to the locker?

Thanks! :)

Hey mate,

A02A, looks like you have an A-series diff in your prado.
Different to G series. G series are in pretty much every hilux
all A70 supras, chasers, etc.

The A series is bigger again, found in newer JZZ30 Soarers (Lexus coupe)
all the JZA80 Supras. I think the new hilux has the A series, not sure tho.

To find out if it will fit...
Compare the diff code A02A, to the one on the Jap, or probably any jap
import Prado. If it is AXXX aswell, it is the same diff. if the last 3 digits
are different to what you have, it will be a different ratio. Just make sure
the codes on both start with A, then you are onto a winner.

EVEN IF the ratio is different, if they both A series diffs, (Axxx on plate)
then you can bolt your crown and pinion to the electric locker centre
from the jappo prado.

Anything else you need to know just ask.
I have a hilux which I have swapped 2x air lockers into, and widetrack'd
and I have a GZ20 soarer that I just put a Cusco 2-way LSD. I have
spent alot of time decipering kanji model numbers, descriptions, etc.

Cheers,
Bart

Thanks 98lux, I've just joined their forum.
Thanks Toyo Truck. Now I have to find the diff code off a 90series Jap prado. I assume they all have the same diff!

I don't know much about this electronic diff lock that has been offered to me, except that it is a jap factory rear diff lock 4.3 ratio out of a Prado, and that the guy that owns it couldn't get his Surf's ring gear onto it.

That would make sense mate,

The surfs all run a G-series rear diff,
Your car, and other newer models, run the A-series rear diff.
This is a bigger centre, so the smaller G-series ring gear would
never work on that A-series centre.

Good for you tho, as the electronic diff locks work OK, not quite as
durable as an ARB air-locker,etc but will be 1000 times better than
your LSD if you have one.

Bart

Ok, I found two Jap prado owners with the factory rear diff lock, and their axle code is A02B. Pretty close to mine - A02A! So I think this will work. Also, someone pointed out this page: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/electric_locker/ and looking at that I think I may have to make some small mods to my diff housing (although it isn't talking about prados).
Would the splines be different? How do I find that out?

That article is referring to putting the electric locker into a Tacoma Diff,
as these have the 8.4" ring gear (A-series diff). The TRD 'lectric diff he
was sent was out of a truck that was still running the G-series diff and housing, as you can see in the comparison pick.

You don't need to do any of this IF you get an A02B as the A-series
locking centre, will bolt to YOUR CURRENT ring gear, then go into your
current A-series housing.

The axles may be slightly different, depending on design of the locker
itself, as said with the 80S
Take BOTH centres out, put them on ya bench, and measure the
depths and clearances of both the output flanges. Then measure the
overall width, height and depth of BOTH centres. Write it all down and
post it up here. You'll be right...

If I was you, I'd get it. They don't come up really often, and there are
very few draw-backs to an electric locker..they are a great, cheaper
alternative to the ARB
