1998 300tdi 110 wagon with 100k for $20,000
or
1999 td5 110 wagon with 100k for $20,000

which one would you spend your cash on and why. also once you have it you can spend $5,000 on mods, what would you buy?

Depends what work has been done on them. Last of the 300s were good motors, first TD5s had some problems, mainly oil in the loom that I know of. Usual rule is last of old model is well refined, first of new model has teething problems

Depends what you want to use the vechile for.
Outback touring i would say the 300tdi wins hands down for it simplicity if something goes wrong.Either you can fix it yourself and if not a local mechanic wont baulk at it due to it been a very simple engine.

If using the vechile for around town and weekend trips i would say the TD5 would be the better vechile.

5k for accesories i would buy the TD5 Chip it and bigger intercooler, rear locker and a set of tyres.

Not sure if your a member of AULRO but have a read of this thread

20k for the tdi is too much imho, talk him down to 18k or less and it would be my pick, the 99 td5 wont be the extreme model so shouldnt have abs,etc and would be good if its been serviced properly.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

Go for thethe td5. the oil in the loom is a $200 fix, so dont be put off. 300tdis have a name for overheating, however, the last of them SHOULD be ok if they have been looked after. The td5 also has a better transfer (Q cut gears which are quieter). The td5s are quicker, quieter and have a better resale. Dont not buy it because it has a computer, they very very rarely bugger up.

First and most important mod, intercooler and chip.
2nd mod, bar and winch.
3rd mod, fuel tank.
4th mod suspension and tyres.
your 5k is now gone.

id go the TDI and i wouldent part with any more than 16k tho id start my bid at around 13k as 20k for a TDI is way over priced even if its only done 100K and the 5 grand in mods tweek the pump bigger cooler and fit deso gas then you should have some left over for new springs and shocks :) :) :)
Cheers

TDi

1999 had sorted out the spline wear problem in the transfer case. Simpler vehicle (no computer).

Agree 20K is way to expensive unless lots of expensive accessories.
