Problem selecting Low Range in diesal 80 series

Post by bumpy »

Hi Guys,

My father has recently got an 80 series and we cant get it into low range. Is there some special way this has to be done?

I engaged the hubs and have used it in H4 but cant get Low. Do you pull it up when in H4? It is quite solid and there is no upward movement at all. On the stick it has "pull" but buggered if we can!!

Totally different to my 40's, so can someone please help!!!!

Cheers

its actually quite usual for 80 series, especially those that have not been used in low range much, i have owned a few 80 and all have done it, my recent 80 is just like that to get in to low, i really have to reef on it to get it to budge but once it starts moving keep it going and it goes in fine. the old man is the same also.

cheers mark

sounds like the stick might need some lubing up.

Mine was also like that when I bought it over a year ago. You really had to pull upwards with two hands to engage low.
Change your transfer case oil and use Castrol VMX-80 Manual, much thinner oil and will work a treat.

I would then change transfer case oil a month orso later after regular use in lowrange etc and it will slip in with little effort guaranteed.

Thanks for the replies guy's....

I have just tried again and I'm f@cked if I can get it up. I sat between the seats and if I pulled any harder I reckon I would pop a nut!!

Is the stick able to be lubed from inside the vehicle?

My father recently had to replace the speedo cable and said the gaskets on the transfer case looked quite new.

So just to clarify...once the transfer is in H4 I start pulling up?

Thanks again

use the clutch
IF IT MOVES, SHOOT IT
IF IT DOESNT, CUT IT DOWN
IF ITS GREEN, PISS ON IT

tried tapping it forwards/backwards on the clutch and putting pressure on the lever? Or taking it down a hill or bumping it or something?

Always helped me in the old 60

pull the rubber boot up and lube the lever, had the same problem with mine, 2 people trying to shift it at once & there was no way it would move, lubed it up and it worked a treat,
