What OIL do you use in your Rover v8??
Just in the process of rebuilding my sludged up V8. Been running Penrite but now i'm not so sure. What grade and brand is everyone using and what is your experience with keeping the engine clean and head gasket leaks?
Its only a stinky rover V8 and its been around since before detergant oils1tuff_disco wrote:I agree, price is not an issue. I have read a lot of forums and many are suggesting high detergent oils and Castrol Magnatec seems to be coming up a lot. Any feedback?
Wanted: Car trailer or beaver tail truck, let me know what you got
i use castrol Magnatec Pro 15w40 - becasue i get it for free,
U will find any oil you buy will have detergents in it, unless maybe the k-mart rubbish, its the types of detergents that do different things in the better oils, hower magnatec in a $40 bottle is no better of worse than mobil in a $60 (mobil has mor esynthetic in it though) bottle so just do some research and buy what u think looks the best. Also having said that, the range rover was around way before synthetic oils too, but if you building a fresh engine and give it a good clean out i'd be using a oil that is the most sythetic (there arnt many full sythetic oils around - even though they say they are)

I read an article in one of the english LR magazines about the Rover V8. They spoke to a fella who worked with Rover V8's extensively for many years. He recommended Valvoline, stated that the Rover V8 liked the detergents they used or something similar, but then I've had people say they wouldn't use it in their lawnmowers.
What do you do? Who do you listen to?

use one, 95% will barely be able to tell the difference in compression/health of the motor after 10 yrs of running it on different oil's. as long as there is semi-reasonable oil in there that's about all that matters. use the one that make's you feel good unless there has been damning evidence not to.disco95 wrote:I read an article in one of the english LR magazines about the Rover V8. Opinions on oils are like arseholes......
HPR does seem pretty popular tho...
2. Its aussie made and good value
3.The rangie doesnt use a drop between services.
I run royal purple in my XR6t ute,Now that is an oil!! Did wonders for the cold rattle from the forged pistons. Doesnt use a drop over 10000k's at 15psi and 450 rwhp.
Tho at $80 for 5 litres (the ute holds 8.5 ltrs) its probably a bit of an overkill for the cranky old push rod V8
