Aftermarket Feroza Snorkel

Post by MightyMouse »

Well guys and gals - its finally happened, an aftermarket snorkel for all Feroza's - not made from tube - this ones rotationally molded plastic, just like the factory ones.

Its certainly dearer than exhaust pipe or plastic plumbing fittings - but if you want that "factory" look and a quality finish.......

Thanks to Chris ( cj ) for passing on a contact name at AIRFLOW.

I rang AIRFLOW and instead of being fobbed off, the manager said to "come down to the factory and you can try all the samples to see what comes close..." Even at this stage was very happy.

Armed with the pics posted by Tzi ( thanks mate.... ) i visited them today and got even more than I hoped for.

After some experimentation we found one that was close, but like Tzi's pic didn't hug the A pillar very well. I was all set to pay up and go when they volunteered to rework it on the spot AND do the external install for me - as long as they could measure up the car. :)

A small notch at the back of the riser was cut out to move it into the correct position and then plastic welded back up. It's just visible if you look at the risers back - but so what ?

They took all the measurements for their installation templates etc etc so the snorkels can be supplied - ready to go.

Have to send them some pics of a standard air cleaner for carb and EFI as mines non standard ( of course... ). and I have a few small things to do like install the pillar bracket and snorkel hood but its close.

Soon as I tidy up the loose ends and can find the #$%^($ camera will take some pics.

So in the very near future you will be able to buy an AIRFLOW snorkel for a Feroza from the usual AIRFLOW stockists. It might not be on their catalog for a while - but dont' take NO for an answer - get them to ring AIRFLOW and ask for Michael.

Just can't speak too highly of AIRFLOW's service, absolute professionals.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D
( usual disclaimers )

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

AIRFLOW do Rocky petrol and diesels already - different enough from the Feroza to need the correct one. Don't know it their are year variations.

We started with a Rocky one as I though it would be close - but not really.

So if you want one - same story don't take NO for an answer.

Yep - that's the pic that started it all.

What you cant see is that the angle of the riser doesn't match the A pillar correctly . This was the pic where you could spot the "mismatch"

Image

Don't get me wrong - it was close enough that I would have been happy as it was - but now its right and measured up for install templates etc etc.

And it will be a available as a Feroza unit not a "um I think its a XXX but could be wrong..."

What can I say - just DONT do it.

P.S. there are also pre-cleaner socks available that insert inside the snorkel head

haha you dont have New Zealand titree to contend with :) trying to sneek thru dense pickets of that stuff does wonders to anything sticking remotely out of the body.

MM, would love to see pics of the snork, i have to admit a factory snork just looks much better, my drainpipe snork dosnt look too bad for 65mm drainpipe, would look a hell of a lot better with a proper snorkel head though. what are they/you planing to use to hook to the existing intake?? i know i had fun with mine as it's frigging oval not round.

am not certain- didn't discuss cost of "production units" as I have no relationship with AIRFLOW - except as a happy customer.

Will ask next time I speak to them and see if I can get a ballpark cost and timeline.

Having a different air filter, one that takes much cheaper / more available ( for me anyway ) elements meant that it was very straightforward.

I tried a charade air box.. just cos I love the sound it makes a 4500rpm  .. but it just didnt make the noise without removing the 'magic black box'... so I went back to the stock feroza tin can.
After refusing to pay $80 for a replacement air filter, I just bought a straight washable pod filter fo $35 and whacked that on instead of the big can...
unfortunately that means deep water is a bit of a problem, and a snorkel is impossible.:?

What air cleaner do you use?

Wait for it..............

and a bit longer............

sure your ready ?

its a Renault 17 drum style cleaner. Stock they look like a huge bullet but half of it is an induction trumpet and warm air valve. Press in a few plastic clips and your left with the actual cleaner assembly. Elements cost me $14. and IIRC are a bit larger in area than stock.

Like all things Renault they are "strange", intake air is drawn in the centre and passed from the outside to the engine. The surface areas exactly the same of course but its just very Renault.

Selected by the ultimate in technical research - a trip to a self serve wrecker :D and a phone call to the nearby European Parts wholesaler fo an element price.

But it works and until something better comes along ( AIRFLOW are working on a heavy duty - off road aircleaner ) its fine.
