I don't see a lot of criticism of your current unit in this discussion - just a healthy concern that it MIGHT have occasional issues like the old model.
Fair enough ARB is is in the business of selling, but as a consumer I am a buyer and as always its "buyer beware". Reputation and experiences with products do matter - marketing doesn't always expose the truth
I am certain that you have bought one product or used one brand over another in the past because of its good reputation or avoided one for the opposite reason - why should forum members be any different ?
Product reputations are hard earned - only consumer experience will matter in the end - and that is going to take years not months to fully earn.
( usual disclaimers )
It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.
I've heard nothing but good things about the new compressor, it's just a shame I cant buy one.
I have had an order in at my local ARB owned corporate store for a long time but apparently head office wont send them any, and all the ones that become available go elsewhere
The hardest thing about owning a jeep is telling your parents you're g a y!!
I also suspect there's a bit of "tall poppy syndrome" at work here. ARB is such a big and successful name in the 4wd industry that there will always be those who claim the products are crap. Just as you can't believe all the advertising you read, you can't believe all the reports you hear either.
Thanks for the posts, Daniel. It's interesting to read about some of the development which goes into products.

Yeah, sorry about that Cossie. Like I said, the projected sales were a blip on the radar compared with what we're experiencing. The stores get stocked up in kind of a first ordered first sent fashion. That's the down side of building products here. If we had simply brought it in from China then our minimum shipment quantity would be an entire container load and there would be plenty to go around.

No worries! I'm always out here but I usually avoid posting except by PM because it's often taken the wrong way. We mostly use the forums to poll opinions, good & bad, about our products and our competitors to try to come up with some sort of 'wish list' to base the designs on. It's not always possible to design a Bundy dispensing TV screen into a bull bar...but it's good for us to think about!

AIR LOCKER
Objective forum debate - here.....
ROFL
But if you are willing to answer questions re. ARB products that would be great. There are many stories and most sales reps know less than I do. Try asking them about the 2 air locker patents and you lose them.

Perhaps so but I stick by my claim that the OLD compressor has a bad reputation and has been reported to have problems many times on this and other forums.
And on another note, because ARB are such a big name in the industry it allows them to use that name to their full advantage. A lessor known/advertised brand would have to make an outstandingly better product to match the sales of an inferior ARB product (not saying the products are inferior just an example).
In the end we wont know for another year or so at least if this product can live up to the manufacturers claims and I remain open until then.
anyone know if its saft to mount these things on their side?
I don't know what the go is re: oiling etc so Im not sure if it could be or if it has to sit upright. I was thinking about mounting it up under passenger dash on the firewall but didn't wanna have to fab a bracket to mount it upright...
considering its an oilless compressor- you shouldnt have any woes mounting it at any angle you want!
I got an old style compressor with my Lockers, but if that dies, im chucking in the new big one (bought the new ones locker loom just in case so i have the capabilities for it!
for many years i was fitting vehicles out with blue tongues and small air tanks for lockers. this setup was well over $500. when the new comp came out we fitted 2 vehicles out then went to tassie and tried them out in all sorts of conditions- extreme heat from engine bays(when you pack a small suzuki engine bay with a larger engine and auto trannies you start gettin some serious heat in a small space), salt air, salt water, sand and all sorts of other stuff. and when the dust had settled we were very impressed. it was half the price of one of my custom blue tongue setups and out performed em. lets just say that this years tassie trip will have more arb compressors. and if you have any dramas actually get into contact with head office about it, its quicker than wasting time here for answers that may or may not be right. problems, if any, only get solved with feedback to the right people.

Joel all compressors do it. Its just that big compressors have big water traps in the bottom of the cylinder, usually with a bleed tap at the bottom.
My orig ARB did it, my next ARB did it and the cheap arse aldi one does it also. Plus the compressor in the shed (really must drain that one).
I think the cheaper compressors might be worse for it. Just cos they seem to get hotter sooner.
Also anyone going to the snow, they run so much fast with a bit of snow on them.
joel HJ60 wrote:Mines great. Has done up 8 33's and 2 35's at once and not cut out. Does my 33's from 12 - 32psi in about 3 - 4 mins.
Has anyone else had any dramas with condensation coming out of the hose?
This is nothing to do with a particular compressor, this is just related to the humidity/temperature/pressure of the air before and after compressing it.
Just like people compaining about heat - it is mostly due to adiabatic effects - so the compressor getting hot means it is compressing a lot of air.
Daniel - it is great to have an ARB engineer on here responding to questions. IMHO ARB gear is well engineered. Personally though, nothing could get me to switch from my converted AC compressor(s)...
But I have bought an ARB locker now Maxi-Drive have closed their doors.
I had the old unit in my Patrol for the lockers and must say it performed flawlessly for tyre inflation also. Although with 35's it was pretty slow. But even handled 4 35's and 2 31 van tyres without a break. So if the new one is better, stronger, faster then it might be time for a look.
Otherwise I was eyeing that Grande Boss that Hobsee sells on ebay. I know it's dearer but does the ARB unit really compare in real world flow rates. Are those Grande Boss actually any good, I don't need locker actuation these days just tyres.
I've had my ARB compressor in the engine bay for a year now.
The only problem i had was the blue hose that came with it pops if you connect it directly to the compressor... happened out on the trail but lucky it was the last tyre so i went out and bought a heavy duty heat resistant hose.
It's been going strong no problems despite the jeep's HOT engine bay. I threw away the 40amp fuse that comes with the kit and installed a circut breaker. It takes a tad bit over 2 minutes per tyre to get from 14psi up to 34 psi (31"x10.5) and about 25 seconds to get a hyundai's tyre from 25psi to 35 psi (14" rims) It takes 2.6 seconds to get the pram's tyres from 5 psi to 40psi.. yeah it's quick with pram tyres
I've now got lockers and it's so quick to actuate the lockers. It turns on only for a split second and the airline is pumped and the lockers locked
i go driving with a couple of guys one of them has the older unit and one has the brand new unit , neither of them has a problem inflating tyres from low or no pressure. we ran them side by side with engines running and the newer unit pumped up 35's from 15psi to 35psi in noticeably less time than the older style unit took to inflate 31's from 15 to 35psi. both of them get used to pump up the tyres on multiple vehicles at the end of trips and dont usually cut out . the way that the newer units shut off themselves when disconnected is very good imho .
I added an air manifold to mine so I could add a water seperator. In canada the water will freeze things up - so I thought it best to keep the water out.
Well, I've had my big bore ARB compressor since January this year and have being using it to pump up at least 8 tyres after each 4WD outing (albeit small, not 33's or 35's) and I reckon it's great. Not long ago, I even pumped up a tractor tyre from flat to 20 PSI which took close to half an hour without any dramas. The compressor is installed between the front seats inside the Zook at about shoulder height so I just switched on the aircon and blew cool air onto it to keep the temperature down and that worked really well !
I reckon it's a top product. I was very lucky to find one during my holiday in Sydney last January and I reckon I got the last one in stock at the time. The guys at ARB Wentworthville, which had just opened at the time, were very helpfull as well. I actually bought the demo model so I only paid $260 for it...
