mixing auto transmissions
hi a while back i remember reading a thread where someone was mixing parts from various gearboxes to make a 4speed auto for the 3speed vitaras. Now i've searched all over for the link (it may of been an american thread) and i can't find it.
Anyone here recall this?

It was so a 4 speed would work on a carby/tbi motor usind the vaccum advance i think they where using toyota or volvo parts that came from the same manufacturer (aisin?denzo?)

But an AW4 ( vit 4 speed auto ) is cable operated for both selection and shift modulation - i cant see a conversion problem from that end.
Perhaps if you outlined what your thinking of doing others might be able to offer some more exact advice.

( usual disclaimers )
It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

i just wanted to re-read the tread see where it ended, it seemed interesting, no real immediate goals but i didn't know the 4 speeds worked on the carb engines

but be aware that not all US vitaras used the same gearbox that ours did - some used the TH200 from memory, rather than the AW-4.
There was also a TH180C (three speed trimatic with a lockup converter)
It's possible that you are referring to is creating a bitsa with TH180C converter/front case and tH200 rear.
This won't be easily possible here. AW-4's whilst a great box are very long and bulky to fit into a sierra though, even with a BL. The trimatic is a much easier fit, but high range gearing gets short quick without the overdrive.
