Post by BULLETPROOF »

I have just bought an fj 40 and plan to rebuild it. Is there any advice or tips on the best way to rebuild it?

That is a never ending question. What are you planning to do with it?

if its your first 4wd.. wheel it for a year and understand its capabilities.. then start building on it..

rebuilding takes a lot of time and patience.. make sure you know what your in for prior or at least be committed before you start cos its a long and sometimes painful journey.

but if its registered already.. drive it first.. and start to make a list of things to fix/improve.

The fj is a total rebuild job and i have been into show utes and want a change of scene,i have grown up around 4wd's and have a rough idea of what i want out of it. the vehicle came with a 253 unfitted, where can i find an adaptor kit to fit the motor, also will the gear box be up to the task?

Marks Adapters/Dellows/Castlemaine Rod Shop will be your likely source of adapters.

Gearbox should have no probs handling a 253 but if you have an early (what year is your 40) transfer case it will need bracing.

Tyres, lockers and playing with spring combinations to improve flex will keep you very happy offroad on the majority of tracks. Lift requirements will depend on what tyre size you want to run. Any other mods will depend on how hard you want to go/how pretty you want it to look.

Front Disc brakes should be high on your priority list - easy swap from a 60 series or hilux.

i have a hilux with 308 (former 253) and i used a marks 4wd adapter.
i found no prob with the bellhousing adapter but all the other crap that they say u need i dident.

in my opinion i think if you have heaps of car junk and tonnes of random bits n pieces laying around all you need to buy off them is the bellhousing and the engine mounts, because all the rest u can make (if your a lil handy) or can buy cheaper from other places. but u might want to look at the stuff carefully and decide yourself. When i went to get mine i just bought all the stuff they said and when i got home it turned out i had most of it already, for example like $60 for a brass adapter for the oil pump pressure, i found one at the hardware for $29.

Also if you can get one, get a 308, much less probs. i dont know why but mine never went well, it always went good but not great. All you need is a short motor and all the rest swaps over from the 253.

good luck, hope this helped
