GQ shakes.

Hi guys, I had a look through some old threads and noticed alot of people having shaking issues at different speeds etc.

My GQ has started shaking while turning left only at certain angles. It drives straight fine.

Any ideas? Or is it a simple wheel alignment issue?

Ok, took car for a drive and with window down can slightly here a grinding sound. When driving next to wall sound echoes and here it a lot louder.

I assume this is the wheel bearings. But would they be causing the shaking problem?

yeah it can be your wheel bearings, my mk had real bad shakes and it was the lhs bearing.
Tightend it up and it is pretty good,
Know just have to do the king pin bearings,and i should all be fixed.
just gotta get off my ass

Mate, as a matter of urgency, jack up your front left wheel and see if the bearings are loose. You can do this by by grabbing the wheel at the top and the bottom and giving it a good shake to see if there is any play.

The GQ is notorious for having the front left wheel come loose because the wheel rotates in the 'undo' direction of the locknuts that hold the bearings in. If the bearings are loose, get them tightened quickly or you risk the wheel coming off whilst driving.

Jacked wheels up last night and there was slight movement in the wheel. Spinning tyre freely in air could easily here grinding noise from the bearing. Will get them replaced ASAP.

Wheel bearings changed....grinding noise gone. Shaking still there. Had wheel alignment done and shaking still there. Replacing the Steering Dampener tonight and hopefully will fix the shaking bit.

Update - Steering dampener been changed now also. Noticed pwr steering fluid was fairly low so I have toped that up.

Still get MASSIVE wheel shaking like my wheels are about to fly off. Any more ideas on what it might be?

Ok also forgot to mention when having bearings done the guy there said that possibly need to look at getting front auto hubs changed as starting to get little bit noisy when spinning them backwards. This wouldn't be affecting it in 2WD would it?

I never had it happen really bad on my GU but the panhard bushes, tie rod ends and wheel alignment are common culprits of those symptoms on jeeps.

Not sure on price, someone else might chime in but I'd be surprised if they were more than $30-$50 and they just need to be pressed in.

You can normally check for excessive play by getting someone to reef the wheel left to right while the vehicle is stationary.

Just got some Nolathane ones and will put in tomorrow morning. Hopefully this will fix it otherwise its then trying the tie rod ends.

did you check your king pins? as noted up the top.

Check bear preload on them. Take the wheel off and take the tie rod end off and if the hub falls under it's own weight, theres is not enough preload on the king pins.

If this is so undo the top and bottom plate 4 bolts and take a shim out, What you do the top you should do to the bottom.

This may help.

Ok changed the Panhard Bushes today and problem appears to be gone. The old ones had slight cracks in them.
