Just put a G16 in the sierra :-) - PROBLEM

Post by matsmad »

Just finished putin a carby vitara motor in the mrs sierra today! Few things to modify but overall simple conversion. Anyway, the old sierra used to struggle in 3rd up our steep hill, but the vit motor accelerates up in 3rd! Mrs is happy :D

EDIT: PROBLEM:

Just noticed that at stationary position with clutch in, it revs to 2500rpm in 4th and 5th gears only. I havent touched the gearbox at all. What would cause this??? Any help appreciated :D

Put it this way. If u r cruising around at a lower speed in 4th or 5th, or on the highway and slowing down, the motor is trying to rev hard therefore speeding u up. I think it is dangerous, and cant work out why it would do it at all, let alone in those two gears only.

Make sure the accelerator isn't sticking at full throttle. I had this happen on mine and it caused it to keep driving even though i'd lifted my foot. It ended up just being some linkages on the carby needed lubricating to get them moving smoothly.

If this is your problem i reckon the reason it only shows in 4th or 5th is because you're usually foot to the floor in these gears to accelerate and cruise on the highway whereas you might not hit full throttle whilst accelerating through the first 3 gears.

Yep, bit of wd40 down the cable used to help unstick mine... hasn't done it in a while.. but could be scary when it wanted to just keep goin..

could also be a function of the fourth/fifth gear switches boosting idle up? Never really understood what they were supposed to do..

Some later model sami's have a 5th gear switch in the gearbox I think? Maybe you hooked that up the the idle up solenoid??? Doesn't explain doing it in 4th though.

Does it do the same if you put the transfer case in neutral and run through the gears?

If not I guess your throttle cable is too tight or catching on something when on the move when the engine moves around. If yes, then.... I dunno.

Maybe check the gearbox and see how many switches there are in it. There should be one reverse switch, but there may also be a 5th gear switch (and maybe 4th?) You could try unplugging these.
