Reduction Gears

Post by Polo »

Hi guys, im new to this forum and just bought a Hilux. Its great. However, the previous owner was not clear on a few things.

With the reduction gear set that he put in, you cant select High Range for some reason. If I do, then its only in 2 wheel drive. There is a H4 button (High Range 4) to press but when i do it does nothing, im still in L4.

The little gear stick goes from H2 - N - L4

Will I constantly be stuck in Low range forever? Because I want to do some beach work.

Thanks for your help.

What happens if you press it when you're in H2?

Sounds like you have a Chain Driven Electrically operated ADD Transfer case our of a SR5 4Runner/Hilux.

If this is the case, it's operation is as follows.

When in High Range it's 2WD High, press the button to select 4WD High. Push the lever forward to select 4WD Low, there is an additonal switch on the lever which detects being moved into Low Range, so will go into 4WD Low regardless of wether the switch on the side is pressed or not.

I really have no idea what happens inside these boxes, but is it possible his crawler gears wouldn't fit without removing something which is required for 4H operation?

Or has the dumb f*ck (previous owner) broken something in the 4H activation system?

If this is the case it also doesnt have reduction gears other than the stock factory fitted ones. There is no aftermarket lower ratio gear set available for any of the chain drive cases.
