MY ate has just tsken out his 1977 te cortina's engine which is a 200 cobic inch or 3.3 litre engine and it has a stromberg carby on it and he is wondering if it would fit onto a Sierra and if so how much preformance gain will there be????

If none knows ill just give it a try on my Zukkie.

well i have to wait till he finishes with it cause he is still while works on his cortina which using it but he wanted to know if it would work since he is getting a 500 Holley onto the cortina so he want need it.

So i thought someone on here might know if they are any good but i have also been doing some research and some people say that a stromberg is a shit carby but ill get it off him once hes done with it and take off the Zuk carb and then compare the two and see if they will match then chuck it on if it needs no adapter plate.

But till then if anyone has any knowledge about a stromberg on a Zuk it would be great help.

There's nothing inherently wrong with a Stromberg carby - like any fuel metering system - carb or EFI - its about the tuners knowledge and parts availability.

As the Stromberg is a constant depression design and the carb in question is off a larger engine you will not achieve full needle lift. This means you will be metering on about one third of the needle, causing the full range of metering adjustment vs dashpot lift not to be availalble.

Of course there are different dashpot springs ( lighter required ) available but this will also entail a metering needle change. A Stromberg off a 1.8 Volvo 244 DL would be a better bet and are worth almost nothing from the wreckers.

However their principle of operation means that unlike fixed venturi carbs they can operate quite successfully when fitted to smaller engines that they were designed for.

IIRC Speedsport did a range of carby tuning books including the Stromberg but they would be quite old now.

So its technically possible, but don't be surprised if information and parts aren't that easy to come by. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

So mighty mouse what your saying is that in theoy it will work with a stromberg carby from a 3.3 Cortina but would probably work better with a 1.8 440 Volvo mainly for the fact its from a smaller engine (volvo is a 1.8 cortina is a 3.3).

But yes once he has finished with it(When he gets the Holley) i will chuck it on the Zuk after a clean and see how it runs then ill get a 4K Corolla Carby aswell as a stromberg from a 1.8 Volvo and let you guys know how it goes.

Mightymouse I think you have a Cortina/Falcon downdraught single barrel Stromberg confused with a CD Stromberg (sidedraught)off a Volvo.
Still too big to work properly though.. Unless you run a blower at 14psi boost!

Corty/Falcon type as fitted to 200cu in. & 250 cu in.

Volvo CD 175 Stromberg as fitted to B18 (1.8)in 142's,144's,145's & B21 (2.1 in 242's,244's & 245's) and in twin setup on early Volvo 164's.

PS: Camdaman, Tell your mate that unless he has SERIOUS head work including oversize valves and porting, a large cam, extractors and a decent ignition (IE: MSD) that a 500 Holley will do nothing but give dreadful fuel economy. I'd suggest a 2 barrel Weber off an XE/XF or if you must go Holley, a 350.

Ah, yes, well, um - I assumed ( first mistake ) that it was a CD Stromberg.

In that case its WAAAAAAAaaaaaaayyyyyyy to large.

Sorry re the slip
