2008 Son of Trials
Moderator: evanstaniland
First time I'd been to this event and I enjoyed it immensely. Well done the Patrol Club for hosting & organising it
Got to meet a few from here (Squik & Miss Fourby). We tried to help them on Event 1 ("Up the Creek") by giving directions, but they were truly too far 'up the creek' !!! I can confirm they thorough earned that GPS system!!!
Our club had 5 entrants, picked up 1st in Standard (he was 2nd overall) and 2nd in Touring; I had a problem with water in the coil lead in the mudhole kill my scores. Only went for the fun of it anyway (I can say that now )
It was a good, relaxed event, no sheep station arguments and only a couple of misbehavers.
Again, well done Nissan Patrol Club, I'm sure we'll be back next year.

You call that help??? lol No really, we needed the help. The course wasn't clearly marked out (to me, with a vid camera in hand, anyway!) and it changed heaps from last year!ET4Runner wrote: Got to meet a few from here (Squik & Miss Fourby). Squik and I had an absolute ball! The fact we were beaten by Glenn's Rangie was soon forgotten as the pics of the X90 attempting Gymnastics came out in the office.

Jessie was busy doing in-car camera, so she was kind of busy... We weren't there to win, simply to test the X-90, do some filming and have fun. Navigation was actually our last priority.
You try getting a SWB, IFS vehicle WITHOUT USING LOCKERS through stuff that has been chewed up by people in larger vehicles or driven by newbies spinning holes... there were a couple of cars there that had competed in Nissan Trials but were running on smaller tyres over the weekend. We got two perfect scores and drove lines that other people refused to have a go at...
Take a pic of the X-90 standing next to a GU with the allowable FOUR INCHES lift and 33in tyres and then try and say it is a level playing field.
To top it off... we didn't break anything
So....Stick that in your exhaust pipe, baby
so were you 2 called "team retardo" ??

Sounds like all of you had a great time. And thats great. I have got to say tho..whats the point of making rules if they don't mean anything? I didn't have much to do with Son of Trials, just too much other stuff going on. But people have contacted me about tyre size and susspension lifts and i related to them what the rules say...33" tyres and 4" combined lift. And basically told them they would have to go play elsewhere. Now I catch up on all of this only to read the likes of Steve and Reece got to compete and get a top ten too. Don't take this personally Steve and Reece but I thought this was aimed at the newbies and the inexperienced.

I did say 'nothing personal' Steve mearly making the point I told people that the rules - posted on the web site stated 4' total lift. And told them they could not enter. So is it a free for all next year? What do I say?thunder wrote:lucky we didnt win then!!!!I had fun And yes it was hard with open diffs.
Um um .I didnt know i upset people for me being there.Sorry

I'm not trying to stir the pot, I always say g'day to Steve & Reece and enjoy chatting to them and everyone else, but I know there were others there who were a bit miffed....
I don't think it made any difference, my 3" lift (actually, 1.5 at the front now with the bar & winch ) was no advantage or disadvantage over the rest out there. My mate in a Pajero (you can't miss "Dora") won Touring with Pirelli Scorpions (hardly an aggressive tyre) and barely 2" lift. But he does have very modified steps/sills

Ah ha ha Dora yes i saw it there loved the "modified steps"
I went with a couple of mates one knocked himself out cold on Event 6 : Black Widow Back Up and had to rush him to hospital. Got him checked out and then headed back to camp. Had to tow my other mate out who blew a CV mind you he wasn't even doing the track at the time anyone who was there on Saturday night would know him.
Sunday after a few of us did the mud hole in 2wd, yeah roost! then we had to run away from the GPSOZ 100 series as it toppled down towards us on, yes you guessed it, Event 1 : Up the Creek with GPSOZ then towed them back to there camp. His poor daughter was still shaking about an hour later.
Ended up coming 28th in Touring class which was great because i was just driving most of the tracks for fun, who needs timing.
I had an Absolute ball on the weekend and will be there next year.
Cheers Ben

I agree with you on this Wendy completly.
Maybe the club needs to look at this a bit harder for next year! They could always run an exhibition class if there was that much interest

And buy the way I came 29 and not in the top ten I was also told by you own Chris Chapman to come along and compete and have fun and with my 12 year old navi i had no chance of winning but it gave her a chance to have fun as well.Miss Wendy wrote:Sounds like all of you had a great time. Also whats the difference with standard class at the nissan trials when you can run 33" tyres open diffs and it does not matter what lift and compete against a standard nissan or toyota

Re: son
Hey Reece, take a Valium. I did say not to take it personally. I know what you scored, I was refering to Steve taking 10th place. You are missing my point completely. Look I don't have a problem with you guys having some fun. My point is the rules stated 4" lift. I told several people these are the rules and that they were ineligable 'cause they had bigger cars. Chris wants to allow you bigger guys in then ajust the rules. But saying that, whats the point of selling this as a comp for the newbies and standards, may as well open it as a funkhana.MUD80D wrote:And buy the way I came 29 and not in the top ten I was also told by you own Chris Chapman to come along and compete and have fun and with my 12 year old navi i had no chance of winning but it gave her a chance to have fun as well.Miss Wendy wrote:Sounds like all of you had a great time. I'm personally a bit upset at how some people are acting towards some of the bigger cars there. As I saw it it was supposed to be a fun filled event with a slight competitive side and i also cant see how a bigger lift and/or comp truck appeal would advantage you in anyway throughout the event as it was all a timing and precision exercise you could have won the thing in and half decent standard 4x4 and a good navi just by just picking the right lines and having a stopwatch on hand. I think some people are missing the point its all about having fun.
A great effort put in by all the organizers.

The people that are getting" upset" are room the patrol club and put in massive amounts of effort to run events for the patrol club!!!BEN_R wrote:I'm personally a bit upset at how some people are acting towards some of the bigger cars there. What we are saying is that the event was aimed at was smaller cars not comp trucks, its the clubs fault for not sticking to its own rules.
As for there being no advantage with the bigger trucks why do we all modify our truck? of course a truck with big lift and no sway bars is going to keep all its wheels on the ground instead of picking up wheels so it will drive further than a standard car thats loosing drive because wheels aren't on the ground.
The event was great, the people were great but i think people would have a whole different take on the event if reece or steve had won it. I know they want to have a fun event just like everyone else but the patrol club needs to maybe give them a exhibition class or just not allow them to win prizes!

Look .the event has been run and won.I will not do this event again in the patrol unless rules are changed or i buy another 4x4.
Im now going to funkhana at willowglen next week as there is a class there for my 4x4.
The event was great for me and the people that spoke to me only had positive things to say!
yes this is a 4x4 that competes at nissan trials without success.it was great to be at this as it wasnt serious and didnt have to line up all day.
Anyway,,Lets just get over it and just post what was good and not all this negative crap.........

Hey Steve,
Thats why I didn't go.
As you know my trucks not the biggest around but someone would have complained so I stayed at home for the weekend.
I'm heading down to Clubkhana as well. Maybe some of the Nissan Patrol guys should go to that event and see that it can be successful to have all classes involved at a "FUN" event.
