question for vitara owners/gurus

Post by 6thgear »

hi all,

quick question - wanting to find out which vitara models had the rear number plates mounted on the rear door, below the door handle?

mine is currently on the rear bumper, but im wanting to relocate to below the door handle, as i've seen some vit's setup like this.

this info would really help so that i may be able to perhaps source the rear handle from that model vitara, as it would come with the plate light also...save me the hassle of wiring it up etc...

also are your plates screwed into the door, or? thanks!

No australian vitaras had the plate on the door. I believe ADR's state the plate must be viewable from either side of the at quite a shallow angle (possibly 15˚, same as taillights) which the spare prevents, so the plate had to go below the tyre. Same deal with prado and pajero.

No reason you couldn't move it yourself though - you'd never get a defect for it- it looks like it was meant to go there.

Mount a small plate light under the handle and you're away.

Self tappers would do, but nutserts (riv-nuts) would be better to hold the plate down.

early models had them on the doors, mostly the carby models. these were not efi ones and not jx or jlx specs.

my 89 carby vit has the plate on the door. my 95 efi has it recessed into the rear bumper.

the early ones had a plain bumper skin which was pretty uniform all the way accross.

thanks guys really do appreciate your answers.

Yeah i've found there to be quite a few variants with the various models of vits...

I'll have a look at the wreckers this weekend i think, otherwise will see if i can fit my own light under the existing door handle, looks like a tight squeeze though!...

cheers guys

I know the USA models have it mounted on the rear door for the XL-7's. Their rear bumper bar also sits a lot higher due to not having the stupid plate moulding on it.... :x
