gq diffs into a s1 disco

gq diffs into a s1 disco
just wondering how much works involved in putting a set of gq diffs in my s1 disco and fitting 35s i have been told its a easy conversion what problems do i need to be aware of any ideas.
Front GQ/GU is easy;
Use the Patrol radius arms (bolt in)
Custom panhard (or mount) and drag link.
REAR DONT BOTHER;
Get an Toyota 80 series rear, as it has the correct offset for the diff pumpkin.
Eiether way the rears are the same amount of work for the GQ/GU or 80series. Just as already mentioned the 80s suits much better.
Lower links- Can do custom arms to suit mounts or custom mounts to suit standard links.
Upper link- Weld the mount for the aframe ball joint and reuse the existing aframe assembly.

Just watch if you have V8 and using extractors mine needed much modifying on the right side to clear gq diff.
In the rear I just used the rangey trailing arms and the original toyota mounting just have to make washer for reducing the hole size on the diff. And i was already using toyota shocks in the rear so used the original 80 series mount also.

Now if it were easy/ possible to make rangie rear stubs fit an LC80 rear then i would use LC80 axle in rear and redrill front rover housing for LC80 HP front centre with hilux cv's a 60 series long side shaft and 1 jacmac custom short axle and flanges, Then you keep your rover brakes and stud pattern and only 1 custom shaft is needed.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
If you did al that work, would it be much better if at all than fitting maxi axles. I know the diffs are a little on the light side, but unless you doing comp stuff one would think they would be OK. I have S1 with 35's and will admit i broke long rear axle first outing, but have been led to believe that maxi axles will solve my problems. Is this the case. I would like to think about 37's down the track after i fit 3" body lift, is that going to be practical with the original diffs with the maxi axles or will i need to consider the diff change as you guys been talking about?
from what i heard maxi have closed down im not sure to how true this is but the shop i was talking to about diffs as i am working out what to do to be able to fit 35s to my s1 disco. he said straight away patrol diffs ill blow the disco ones up and seen as i have a set lying around at home i thought why not. just trying to get as much knowledge on the coversion before i do it as possible
Hmmm, I don't think fitting Patrols is all rosey. 35's on a Patrol axle is probably only about the same as 33's on a Rover axle for clearance. There are also a lot of people like myself that are running 35's on Discos and Rangies quite successfully, but if you do go care free especially when the truck is heavy then you can still break a Rover diff, but they're not that bad.

NOT THAT BAD!!!!!
No they are worse than bad any little break of traction then hook back up and bango. I did 2 diffs (front and rear) in one outing done the rear first and while limping out of bush broke the front.
Its pretty much good luck if you dont break rover diffs if you are doin tough tracks especialy rock.
And yes i did change my driving style but to no evail as even some of the boys off here couldnt believe how easy they broke.
I couldnt be more happy with my gq front and 80 series rear conversion.
And all up cost me $1000 which is what one set of maxi axles would cost plus then you need gears for the bigger tyres and stronger centres which were already inclusive when you do conversion.

Are you talking stocker diffs or locked? We do all of the hard stuff and rock etc and I've seen the Rover diffs go, but when they go on a locked truck they're either going carefree on 35's or running really heavy on 35's. ive never had a prob running 35s on my fender look at alot of comps in Europe they run 35 ets and seem to go allright yet i know a couple of guys that have blown lc60 diffs . ashcrofts web site they claim to have no breaks with diff pegging im sure u could find a diff work shop that could make one up if u want to run patrol gear why not just buy a patrol

You can break everything or not break anything - so likewise the nissans will also break. I tend to think that you can build a LC60 front end stronger than what you can for the Nissan or the Rover. It's all academic at that stage though for most.
