Overheated TD42T - whats it worth?
Overheated TD42T - whats it worth?
I have the opportunity to buy a TD42 with turbo which has been overheated due to the radiator cap being left off. I'm trying to decide what its worth.
It starts and runs but is spitting oil out of the breather hose - as in really bad blow-by since the overheat. Turbo still spools up but its down on power. There's heaps of oil in the turbo and feed pipes but I suspect this came from the breather as the airbox is also full of oil. Its an early GQ TD42 with aftermarket turbo and aneroid fuel pump.
What is likely to be wrong? - blown head gasket, warped head etc?
Doesnt seem to be any oil in the coolant or water in oil. Is it likely that a head skim and new gasket will suffice or is it likely to be a parts only proposition?. I need to make a reasonable estimate of the likely damage as this affects what I should pay for it.

if the oils all right then the turbo should be fine, repare wise it might be cheap or could be expensive.
I would offer the price of a second hand turbo kit n around $500 to $700 for the motor n see what happens.
rebuild kit is around $1600
head work ?
filters n fluid around $200 max
machine time if nessesary ?
It may not need too much doin to it but you will not know til you open it up, the aneroid pump in good nick would be handy.

wheres it located and what is it you want off it?
the aneroid pump would be of interest to me if you wernt going to use it, and maybe the turbo kit...
but im guessing this is the reason your looking at the motor?
damaged goods can be a doozy to estimate the value of, you may find the piston skirts are collapsed/scuffed, scuffed bore, scored crank, and it will require a heap of machining and money to get it good.
or it may be sweet, and cost you just a standard rebuild to do...
cheers, andrew

I want the pump, the turbo kit and the oil cooler setup. Apparently it was 'knocking' before being shut down. I wont know what the damage is until the head comes off but the price is right and I've decided to buy it.love ke70 wrote:wheres it located and what is it you want off it?

not nesassarily, from what ive heard the standard ones are a better turbo on the highway to drive, but after pricing up all the bits and bobs, i figured im better off going a whole new kit, rather than trying to pick up bits and peices here and there.
when i have more money behind my dreaming i will take you up on your suggestion on ringing dieseltec
