got my car tunned??? or did i
got my sierra 1.6efi vitara motor with link computer dyno tuned few months ago and when its runs it sounds, smells and looks like its running rich as there is a decent amout of smoke from exhaust. does this sound right? thats how they gave it to me and told me its now tunned. should i go elsewhere to get it done again properly?

Re: got my car tunned??? or did i
Did it run like that straight after they tuned it or has it been slowly getting like that. Depending on the place the should have tuned it with a wideband oxygen sensor and have a run showing power and stoichiometry on the graph. If they did give it straight back to you the way it is (smoking, smelling fuely etc) and told ya its tuned I wouldn't be going back.gumtree wrote:got my sierra 1.6efi vitara motor with link computer dyno tuned few months ago and when its runs it sounds, smells and looks like its running rich as there is a decent amout of smoke from exhaust. does this sound right? thats how they gave it to me and told me its now tunned. should i go elsewhere to get it done again properly?

gave it back to me like that. i had to take it back already once coz it would idle at 3000rmps unless it was really hot as in hot day at fraser on sand.
EDIT by RUFF: You may not give a fu<k who you bag out but its my ass on the line when you do it here

yes next place i hunt down to tune it i will ask for full specs before and after performance graphs. do they give warranty or something?
atm on the freeway it doesnt go past 110 really and slows a bit down to 90 on hills. when they tuned it it gave 64.4 hp, cant remember if it was at rear wheels or flywheel thou.
ive heard there is a really good place down the coast somewhere so ill have to find it soon.

Gee man thats sad! Thats just a nudge over 48kw and im assuming this has gotta be at the wheels. My 1.3 with weber and extractors turning 30' mudds pulls 45kw at the wheels. Hope ya havent done any damage to the thing. Its a 1.6EFI, bloody thing should fly! 110 and you dont seem to have extreme mods, something is very wrong there.gumtree wrote:yes next place i hunt down to tune it i will ask for full specs before and after performance graphs. do they give warranty or something?

I used to have a 1974 Galant, with a 1.7 engine and single DCD Weber carburettor. That had 92 hp at the wheels. Mate has a 1.7 with twin DCOEs, which measured at 120hp at the wheels.
These are a 30 year old 2 valve carburettor fed engine. 64 hp from a modern 4 valve EFI engine with aftermarket tuning sounds a little disappointing. I'd guess you have around 100hp, or 75kW, at the flywheel. According to Red Book, stock was 71kW. Something doesn't sound right.

thats my thoughts exactly and after they tuned it i said to lance thats seems low to me and he resured me that it was good power from a 1.6 efi and the best hed seen as like 77 and that was with work done. being my first 1.6 sierra i thought ok he must know as he works with them all the time but i still has a gut feeling it was crap. also he told me it would be about $200 for the tune and they ended up charging my $450. it is a little better than when i brang it in but it never ran this rich before. that $450 down the drain as i have to get it properly retuned.
also lance told me that he had to go there and spend 2 hours of his time to make sure they "tuned it right" and the he wasnt going to charge me for his 2 hours, like he was being nice. i droped the car at AMMS and i picked it up, so i dont see why he would even have to be there for the tune as they would know what they are doing id assume.

Did you install the ecu?, if so was it smokey on the basetune that the ecu would have came with?.
Take it back and ask them to stick the a/f probe in the exhaust.
I had no problems there with mine when i took it there, although i tuned most of it and only took it there for a tidy up and a power run.
If he deals with them all the time i wouldnt be suprised if he uploaded another map from the same engine onto your ecu. It shouldnt cost 450 for a n/a unmodified engine to be tuned when it was already running. thats almsot 4-5 dyno hours.
Ben i think his name is at rotary motorsport at brendale is good, explains things and does a good job, reasonably priced too.

they charged $150/ hr.
no it wasnt smokey before i took it there, and the ecu was already there when i got the car. it been there for 4/5 yrs.
i dont see why my engine cant get 90 kw, 64.4 seems low and with a efi and aftermarket ecu it shouldnt be a problem.

another vote for rotary motorsport. nice guy and knows ALOT.... plus his drag car is nuts, sometimes does little runs up kemzow in the avos or night.... very nice hearing his 7 second rotor doing a quick strap round the block
anyway, take it to rotory motorsport.

turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
this might sound a bit silly, but have you checked all your timing and spark? Your dizzy may be out, leads may be stuffed, replacing most that stuff wont cost more than $200-300. Maybe your meant to run specific advance on your dizzy with your ecu??? something worth checkin out. I got a stock ecu, but after a rebuild, a cam and headers, a now run 10 degrees BTDC with a recurved dizzy...

was thinking of changing all that for the sake of me knowing its all new but when i rung up dyno shops they said leave the sparks till after the tune coz when they play around with the amount for fuel mixture the sparks could get dirty. and timing belt, how do i check that, can the dyno place do that for me.
also is actually taking it back to amms as i rang them and the guy that tuned it has left and the main dude now was nice about it and said to bring it in and he'll look at it. if the smokey is fuel, which i think it is, the he will fix it free as it shouldn't be tuned like that, but if its oil then it will obviously cost as he will compression test to check piston heads etc.

vitara
give pagey a buzz at complete auto in caloundra. he is a mechanic and built and races his vitara at cruiser. it absolutely flies. metalic blue one that races for the park team.he knows them inside out. dont know his no though. good luck.
only the first roll hurts, then its a ride..
At the end of the day power is nothing on a dyno tyres, diff gears, gearbox ratios etc all change the power, but the engine should be running smooth and not blowing fuel out the exhaust, have you taken it back and showed them?. $150 an hour thats ridiculous, did you get a few quotes?, 150 an hour to tune an engine that is not difficult eg, turbo, worked auto etc. is very steep.
An Hour on the Dyno is an Hour on the Dyno it doesnt matter how far out of tune it is. $150 is the going rate on most dyno's. Ever priced a Dyno? They are not cheap and at $150 an hour your going to do a lot of work before you own it.berad wrote:At the end of the day power is nothing on a dyno tyres, diff gears, gearbox ratios etc all change the power, but the engine should be running smooth and not blowing fuel out the exhaust, have you taken it back and showed them?. $150 an hour thats ridiculous, did you get a few quotes?, 150 an hour to tune an engine that is not difficult eg, turbo, worked auto etc. is very steep.
Start around 40k for a basic job, upto 100-120k for AWD jobby.gumtree wrote:i have no idea about dynos or how much they are.
they'd have a big price tag but not that big. im guessing $100,000 should get one, they wouldnt be that complex to be alot more. anyone actually know?
Paying interest over five years make it's total about 55K for a basic job or 160k for a AWD job.
@ 150 bones an hour you could allocate about 70 of that to the dyno use and the rest to labour. That means you need to sell about 2300 hours of dyno time before you're actually making money on the dyno itself.
150 an hour is reasonable for a good dyno and good tuner.
As far as an indecent proposal goes, I'd accept nothing less than $100,000 to tolerate buggery. Any less and it's just not worth the psychological trauma.
The dynos that i have used (not me but have had my 2wd hilux tuned on) have been less than that and have been spot on the money, my haltech runs a a/f sender and guage so i know its right.
I have a rough idea on what there worth, i dont care if its worth a million dollars, if you want to charge the going rate then you need to give an end result that is up with the other dyno tuners.
Im sure we've come to the conclusion that the job was not done properly and if it was something has gone wrong, does the ecu have flash memory etc if not and you disconnect the battery after a while the ecu loses battery lift and drops the tune, returning to base map.
