steering shaft lengths

Post by DIRTY ROCK STAR »

Can the toyota gurus and keen helpers out there help me out.

im stuck.
im building my Fj40 up in members section etc.
i have an 80 series steering box.
and still have the 40 series column.
the distance from the back of the flange on the standard 40 steering shaft to the steering box is 630mm.
anyone got any suggestions of a handy shaft to fit?
or is there a better combo? new steering column etc that might match up.

H-E-L-P
was t hinking of 60 or 80 series lengths? anyone have details?

cheers in advance.

so the end of your 40 steering is setup for the rag joint?

As per 60# powersteering upgrade why dont you try and find a 60 steering colum which has the uni at the end, then you should be able to find a suitable or custom fab up an intermediate shaft to fit..

best thing to do is pull out the 40 series steering shaft, slide down a bearing and fab a carrier for the bearing that bolts onto the bit that protrudes from the firewall.

keep the rag joint on that end.

cheers guys i will look into these options.
i was thinking of going the whole 60 setup as it may be easier with engineering.

but i will get some parts and sit down and see how the lengths measure up.

naa man, 60 series colum is ok but the positioning and the in cab length sucks.

putting a bearing down the end is your best bet. This does not work with the late FJ40 columns with the steering lock as the shaft has a welded sleeve at the top for the locking mechanism to catch onto.

the absolute best solution is you chop the shaft , get a spline cut onto it ( about 100$ anywhere) and then slide a custom carrier and bearing on from the bottom :D

I am looking into doing a similar conversion on my FJ40. From what I can gather, 55 series steering column is the go as it already has the bearing at the bottom but it's a little longer in the cab, but still very similar to the 40 series'.

As for intermediate shafts, I'm told that if you use a 60 series box you can use the intermediate shaft from the 60 series and just bolt it onto the end of the 55 series column (or 40 series column with bearing and carrier).

I'm not sure how correct any of this is as I haven't been bothered checking it out yet or even looking at my vehicle. Too many other things to do first (Lexus V8 conversion, SOA, 60/75 series leaves, etc...).

Good luck.

ive got a 75 series tilt colum in my 40 it sits lower than a 40 wheel but im still happy with it but i run a small steering wheel

im also using a 75 series intermediate shaft these can be shortened easily by just bashing them shorter (there desinged to collapse under a front on impact so you dont get speared by it)

I have just finished my P/S conversion for the 45 over easter. Used 60 series box, 55 column with bearing on the end, ($40 from a member) The intermediate shaft is a Hybrid made out of a 60 series interemediate shaft and a 80 series shaft (from local wrecker) Shaft was cut and joined by a local sunny coast machine shop (so no problems with engineer)
Got heaps of photos but they are not hosted as yet. Can email if anyone wants them.
Will post some pics of the buildup when I get my act together.

Cheers Greg
