Like sierrajim said, i think skids are a good idea.

Personally In the near future I will be running a skid plate, lifting the case by about 1-1.5" so I don't lose any ground clearance.
I got hung up last weekend in the rocks. once was enough. I'd much rather know the case is protected and i can keep on punching along while sliding over something without gouging a dirty big hole in the case... instead of having to get out and stack rocks, take different lines, get mates to lift the car up to get the driveline off the rocks!

There are some awesome ideas in here...maybe it should be put into the BIBLE.

It usually depends on what the event organisers for each particular event state what is require...E.g. Vicwinch usually require at least a ccda approved and log booked 4 point cage but the Piranha Pursuit doesn't (isn't affiliated with ccda actually)

http://ccda.info/cms/index.php?module=D ... evel&cid=1

download the Manual of Motorsport latest version and read through.

As far as I know a lot of events in Vic anyway don't seem to offer standard class, meaning you would have to run in a higher class if you wanted to participate. The best thing to do is to try and get down to the ccda meetings.

You're talking about a vic comp, yes? dude.. it's all about the patrols.

Unfortunately, as I have said (and has been proven before) the Vic comp scene isn't really designed around technical driving - its mostly about stopping the car so you get the winch out. the whole structure foavours cars with lots of HP and suspension designed to take big hits.... and then a very fast winch. It's totally the opposite of how a Suzuki works.

It's a shame that to date the idea for a "road reg" or "trials" format of Oz-Rock hasn't got off the ground- The trials based format would be a much better format of competition for suzuki owners.

I know what your sayin! I'm an acreadited marshel and i know exatcly what your sayin!

BUT this years vic winch had no mud and each team only had to winch once! Unless they took a crap line!

Obviously wouldn't be in it to be competitive but just a bit of fun!

Spot on, Went to the Engel Round One at Neerim today to check the whole thing out. Yes there were a couple of deep bog holes which everyone had to winch, but other than that what I saw in terms of track difficulty, a well setup zook could drive pretty much all of it.

If ur a good decision maker under stress and have a good driver/navi combo you could do pretty well just by getting to the start of a bog hole, pulling out the winchline, set it up and drive and winch through the bog; instead of ploughing head first into it at 60-80km/h and having to do a double line pull on the highmount because you have wedged the bullbar that far into the mud that it won't budge.

In terms of the Horsepower thing, in reality I would probably only drive maybe one or two comps a year, so depending on how things go this week, I'm going to pick up a 4age 20v silvertop and box and drop that in. The g13bb's are slim on the ground and are being quoted at around 1800 for engine only. the 4ages I can get engine, box, loom, ecu and 2.5 times the power for personal trips as well as the occasional comp which I'll run in challenge class...whether it be production or challenge class they all drive the same tracks...

but its a long road...vic winch looks like a good target to get everything setup, 6point exo, highmount, seats and harnesses transfer lift, bashplate protection and lots of little things....

The 4AGE silver tops are a great motor, but IMHO the conversion cost will see either motor come out about even. They're far from a bolt in- sump, exhaust, airbox (remember 20V's are quad throttle body....) It's all going to get exxy to do right, not to mention you will have 100hp more power to keep cool over a stock sierra.

Oh, and they're quite heavy... all the more reason to shed more weight.

I do need to raise a gearbox choice issue though. Reading the excellent thread on 4AGE gearbox choices posted last year (by bazooka?) and having spoken to some 4AGE swappers, I think the best solution is a trimatic auto.

My understanding is that a combination of RWD corolla parts and vitara parts (and a pretty easy to fab tailshaft adapter) will give you a common and cheap gearbox core, a usefully long jackshaft, and a way of taming some of the HP.

Most of the 4AGE swaps I am aware of with manuals ended up with two unis back to back. This is very uncool.

I also think autos are just soooo much better than manuals off road it's not funny- even in a comp scenario - as an example, you'll never run over the winch cable as you can always match your speed to the winch. (nost always possible with a mnaual.)

Just my 2C.

good luck with it, it will be a cool car when it's done.

Dank was ment to be marsheling but sence i only got back last night i couldn't! Sounds like some carnage but like you said a zook would take a totaly different line in every obsticle!

Good luck with your build if it's like the rest of the work done on your car it will be top shelf!

Like i said i'lll have a look at yours when it's done but i wouldn't be doing it to be competitive only for fun! Would aslo be done on a budget cause i'm only a second year app chippy!

Good luck with yours when your back on the road we can finally go for a wheel!(I was brocken now your brocken........)

Keep this thread updated cause i might need it.......

Man i've been going through gearbox tech for the 4age...talk about brain swelling...:?

Unless anyone wants to make a bearing housing for the back of a vitara trimatic to support the shaft i think i'm gonna go a 5sp. i'll keep updating///

watch out with blowing up the t50. you really want a jap spec box and not that many around. with the 20v the plenum chamber is quite big to fit into the zook and also remember you will have to fab the hydraulic clutch up. (hiace parts i beleive work)

i think the engine i'm looking at has a jap t50. confirming tomorrow...we'll see...I do like the trimatic idea too for parts availablilty and ability to build stronger....

righteo, so got the 4age motor (20v silvertop) sorted now and some rear wheel drive engine mounts for it.

The gearbox I have sourced is a jatco 3spd box from an AE71 corolla which is in primo condition apparently.

whether it's the same as the one in steve's mates car running 35's i'm not sure...I'm going down tomorrow morning to check it out.

If its not the same as the 3spd trimatic then whether I can use a vitara output from the 88-94 vitara 3pd i'm not sure...I'll take some pics and see if its the same as the dead vitara auto I have sourced...

from now on more of the tech stuff on my car will be found in my build thread as this thread is going off topic slightly...

I'll post here with anything I have done in relation to setting up my car for ccda specs....
