NVH Levels in a sierra.
NVH Levels in a sierra.
G'day, just after some ideas about ways to make the sierra a happier place to be, it's a 95mdl hard top.
What would you recomend to make it a little less noisey on the highway, more/thicker insulation under the carpet? Some sort of spray on sound deadner under the cabin? earmuffs?
Cheers
Dan

Check the doors are sealing properly, the bailey channel is intact, all the firewall plugs are in place, the gearshift and handbrake boots are in good condition, the unis are in good nick, the exhaust doesn't have any leaks, and that everything is tight.
Make sure the gearlevers aren't in contact with the body etc, it will cause drumming at speed.
Beyond that, obviously you are running road tyres at the correct pressures and the car is properly tuned and otherwise running well? There should be no identifiable gearbox transfer case or diff noise at all.
I have found NVH lowered significantly by lifting the transfer case - this lines the jackshaft up with very little angle and seems to make a huge difference. This has been the case with three cars I have built over the last few years.
However, this isn't really possible without a body lift creating its own problems.
At the end of the day though, a Sierra is a noisy and harsh car. Most of the changes Suzuki did when they built the coil sierra were aimed at making them quieter. They are much smoother/quieter on the road than a leaf car - door seals are better, bailey channel was improved, body mounts changed,
Yes, you can look at thicker insulation etc, but it won't make a massive difference. I run no sound insulation/carpet/rubber at all in mine and it's pretty quiet, but I don't daily drive it.

Coiler doors are much better designed to counter this. They were heavily redesigned.grimbo wrote:putting some insulation on the inside of the door panel can help as they are a large flat panel of steel that drum away at any sort of speed
