NH 2.6 using oil

Post by muldrock »

Hi All
I have recently purchased my third pajero and it is a bit of a run around but mainly for fun. It a 91 NH 2.6 Anyway when I purchased it , it had a blown head gasket so I pulled the head off and it looks great, no lip and clean boars, the head also looks great seems to have been rebuilt not to long ago. So I reassenbled it and it fired up and runs quite good, could do with a carb kit. It runs duel fuel and I have run several tanks of fuel and gas through it and its still running great but it uses about half a litre of oil to about one tank of fuel. There is no smoke blowing out the back and it doesn.t leak a drop on the ground. I have been told that once these 2.6s have been rebuilt that they will always use oil, but where is it going. Anyone got an idea?

Its normal for an engine to use a bit of oil but after rebuild and run in oil usage shouldn't be noticeable. Have you checked the coolant lately? The oil might be going into the coolant?

My old NA once had a 4D56 fully rebuilt. It lasted a whopping 97,000km before taking the engine to the scrap heap. The problem was that it consumed way too much oil (sometimes I would pay $30+ per week for oil). I asked a couple of people about this and they said that it was caused by blow-by. My engine apparently was lacking compression, and I was told that it would be best to replace it, as their wasn't much options for fixing this with my engine. I got a good quality 2nd hand engine in 2005, and it is still going very well and doesnt consume any oil. I haven't gotten round to doing an oil change on my car for about 4 months now, which is about 10,000km (very naughty I know) and in that time my car has consumed about 300mls of oil! I don't know if this information is of any help to you, as my car is Turbo Diesel not petrol, but it may give you something to think over!

Hi
Thanks for the info, I think I may have the same prob as I check the air filter and it has a lot of oil in it and this would be from blow by. I have checked my compression and it has around 160psi across to board which seems to be good. So why the blow by, would it possible be excess oil being pumped to the top end which is causing oil to be caught in the blow by pipe as there is no filter of any decription on this pipe. If so has onyone got any ideas to solve this problem. As it seems a shame to dump an engine that runs fine.
