GQ suspension set ups

Post by sturra82 »

looking at putting a rancho suspensio lift in the gq. looking at least 5inches with adjustable shocks. just wondering if anyone has this sort of set up. if not what else are people running and how much would these kits cost. i dont want to change angles to much either so was loking at castor plates and all.

Yes I have this set up with 6" Tough Dog Coils (the heaviest duty 6" coils they have) and Rancho 9000X adjustables.
The Tough Dog coils are 4 years on and still brilliant.

Slightly bouncy when fully loaded even on full hard setting because the 9000X are small bore and body but they have the 9000XL's now which are still 35mm bore but have a 70mm outer body which hold a lot more oil and come in longer lengths than the X's.

If you want adjustable shocks that are harder on full setting than the Rancho's the Tough Dog 45mm adjustables are the ones.

All they are really good for is allowing quicker flex in reaction to the terrain but make it more bouncy as the Rancho's adjust both rebound and compression.

I can supply a 5" kit like this for around $2500 including drop arms and genuine Nissan slotted bushes $250 but there's probably someone a lot closer to you than me who can supply.

Rancho + GQ = Poo

They are not up to the task on a heavy rig unless you run duel shocks. Toughdog shocks have had their issues in the past also, but I have no idea what they are like now. Search and read through some old threads and you will learn from many other people's mistakes and get an idea of what works well. Also the cheapest option is not always the cheapest in the long run.

My Rancho's have been on there for 4 years and still work well.

I agree they are a little light on for loaded GQ but factory shocks are no bigger either (just shorter than mine)

Search all you like Sturr82 you will find just as many people very happy with their suspensions as you will unhappy, no matter what the brands.
You asked about this set up from someone who has it and I gave you my honest opinion and experience with them.
I dont even actually carry these two brands but will get them for someone if requested.
I mentioned the Rancho 9000XL's because they are a larger bodied adjustable shocker than their skinny brothers and may be firmer but I have no experience with them.

I also have Ranchos and they faded in the first couple of months. :x They are now softer on their hardest setting than any shock on the market. Very bouncy. :multi: Don't know about XLs but I stand by what I said about putting regular Ranchos on a bigger rig.

Put some EFS extreme shocks in  they are way better than tough dog or rancho. I have driven on all three and would never have either of them again.

you probably wont like the boaty feeling of the ranchos on a GQ. stiffer shocks and softer springs allow for goos flex and good offroad handling.... just dont go round corners too fast.

EFS extremes are what im saving for
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

I've got pro-comp 4" springs and matched shocks, and i'm pretty happy (worlds above my old MK). The springs are fairly soft, and the shocks have a fairly fast compression/rebound too, but as its only my weekend car and i dont try to drive it like a racecar - it doesn't bother me.

It tows a trailer nice, handles and sits better once its full of camping gear.

Also, you mentioned not messing with angle etc., first up you'll be after some adjustable panhard rods for lift 3" and over, brake bias bracket, and i'd go drop box's (or dropped radius arms if you can afford it).
