TD Engine Problem

Post by simmo404 »

Driving yesterday, a very disturbing rattle suddenly started coming from engine bay and lost power. Quickly pulled over. Started Engine again and loud plume of thick smoke came from exhaust. Quicky turned it off. Now I had it towed to mechanics and will hopefully have an idea what it was by tonight. Im thinking it may be timing belt, but the noise is concerning as i think something has broken and got in, and its burning a shite load of oil. Valve smashing piston? Dont know.

May be sourcing a 4d56 very soon if anyone knows of any?

Its a 89 Gen 1 ITD 2.5 SWB, with 145,000k's on clock.

Ill let you know what the verdict is but I will be looking for advice/parts.

Anything similar ever happen to anyone?

Yeah that was another option, probably the cheapest one. Saw a website before for aftermarket turbos. Supposably a decent performance increase

Turns out the timing belt slipped and caused the valve to pierce one of the pistons. The engines all seized up.
Any one know of anywhere in victoria to find reconditioned 4d56 engines?

We used to use this mob when i lived in QLD. They are Vic Based. They import engines which are guaranteed to have done no more than 80 000 ks. They are deffinately worth a call.

Thanks for the links guys, after a bit of research i decided to go with engines plus. Originally considered getting the 4d56 engine and changing the exhaust manifold, turbo etc to the new one to save a few bucks. But the price difference ($205) wasn't worth the difference for labour and incase there was something f..ed with the old turbo.

So $2500 for the 4d56T with 6months warranty. Getting it fitted at Yarravalley 4wd in Healesville, Getting a new timing belt straight away  , and possibley getting the radiator checked/cleaned but ill see as he gets into it.

So thanks and ill keep u posted.

I believe we have an overseas member who has put the 3.2 DiD into a Gen 1.

Edit: Yes, 4ePajero. See http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/phpBB2/su ... ht=#579767

Yes. NLShorty put the DiD into his NL Shorty. He did a write-up on it, but I don't recall if it was here or Pajero Club Forum.

Edit: Write-up isn't here, and it was probably on the old Pajero Club Forum. May be forever lost...
