Gearbox Noises

The gearbox in my 95 SJ70 with 171000K's is making rumbling noises in all gear at low revs and make a "tick" sort of noise when changing into 5th gear. is it anything serious?

Sounds like it needs a rebuild.

Be aware though it can be hard to isolate transfer case noise from gearbox noise though.

is there any way of telling the difference between gearbox noises and transfercase noises?

you can try putting the transfer in neutral and running through the gears stationary but the gearbox / engine wont be under load so may not prove anything.

yer it only makes the noise under a bit of load and always makes the tick noise into 5th
