Modified Tray...Ideas needed. Post up your pics...

Post by Toyo Truck »

Hey Guys,

As some of you know,
the tray on my lux is a constantly evolving work in progress LOL

I bought the base of it from Chad ages ago, and have modded it quite
extensively from there.

Here it is in its current form...what do you think?
Image

I want your advice on a few things...
1) I want to modify the bars on the rear section, what are your thoughts?
The bars down the side give great rollover protection, I have tested em!!
but are too intrusive of tray space. what would you do for side rollover
protection, but to open up the rear of the tray a bit more?
IE to fit motorbikes on there facing backwards, etc.

2) I want to paint the sheet metal sides, was thinking camo, but open to
suggestions (a photoshop of this would be good but I don't know how to)

Also, post up pics of yours or others custom single cab trays that are
good.

Cheers,
Bart

Don't you only need the rollover protection near your cab? If you're that worried, make the front bars part of an exo, and scrap the pipework rear of that, as its only the tray underneath which looks like it's strong enough to take a bit of a hit anyway.

Bright red extended shackles are also very subtle! Nice work :D

Sorry mate, but that is bloody ugly ! Doesn't suit the lines of the Hilux and just looks all out of balance.

x2 the sides really look crap, need rounded arches to suit the 4x4. It looks too mixed up with after thoughts. Maybe back to basics would look better and possibly stronger!

Hey Toyo Truck , what do you want to do in the way of wheeling , if like the other night at menai , you were dragging you tow bar every where , maybe shorten the rear chassis up to the rear of your spring hangers , build a new tow bar or modify existing to suit. The tray which Jonamaphone has drawn would be okay , but you would loose your tray depth , but when wheelin you don't usually carry all those spares. The outer edge of the rear tray should be pipe , to allow the vehicle to slide along obstacles , but still provide vehicle protection , and as previously said , if your worried about rollover , build a exo over your cab , and a top rear tube right round the rear would provide all the protection you would need , it would also be lighter , and buy a bike trailer , there pretty cheap for a second hand one. You will also need a toolbox , cause the last thing you want in a roll over is all that shit coming through the rear window.

Cheers Paul.

Seeing how this has become a "post a pic of your tray" thread I may as well ad a pic of my old Lux.

billabong has the right idea....

make sure you put a tiedown rail around the sides....

otherwise - you cant put odd loads in the back. (like bikes) Or shift around where your toolbox / esky is fitted.

Nice tray. Thinking of doing this down the track on my HJ47. Yours looks good too billabong. Good clean lines.

Without being too harsh...it looks fukced.

I agree with the other boys who have said start again. Clean lines and a symmetrical design is what you need. And take your towball out for wheeling - it gets full of crap and makes it hard to get it out and easy for rust to get in.

Well that gets that out in the open.

Aside from the looks side of things, weight can also be taken into account. Do you need to have the back of your truck to look like an amphibious (SP?) vehicle?

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the kind comments LOL
Its all good though. ;)

I know this tray looks a bit haggard. but its very functional.
And trays don't come more heavy duty than this one!
I always have gearboxes and transfer cases and diffs and crap
in the back, and I go wheeling with that shit strapped down in the
back and there's not 1 dent in it.
I have rolled it numerous times onto the side and the rear roll-bars
and they've never moved. couple of hard rolls into trees and stuff
too. sometimes I roll the car onto the rear roll-bars for shits and giggles!
just cause I can :D

So I want rear roll bars that extend backward at the roof line for this.
AND I need the storage room on the back for many reasons. And after
all it is a ute after all...meant to carry crap around. So I don't want a
full cut down tube tray with no bottom or no sides.
AND I want to be able to put a canvass over the roll-bars and be able
to slep in the middle of it still.

So with that in mind...what would you do. To keep a fully functioning
tray, that is tough as hell, with sides that can support the weight of the
truck and can be used almost as a pivot point on trees, etc

Chad, that sounds awesome dude, I have a few ideas
let me know when you are free to do something.
I'll hook you up a carton or 2 ;)

Cheers,
Bart

Slight hijack dude - sorry, but that lock box in the tray is awsome - my single cab has so little room so I always have stuff sitting in the back. how much stuffing around did it take to make the box in the tray.

well done
