Zooky

Post by Matty Tyler »

hey guys,
this is my first post and i was just after some help.
i am currently looking to buy a zook, but unsure what too look for.

i was wondering how capable zooks are before suspension upgrades and mud tires. how much would i be looking to spend for a 1.3 carby zook?

p.s maybe check ebay cos ive seen a few sierras goin for $500 and they look pretty decent other wise most ive seen anyway, are $1000 - $5000 depending on whats been done to them... ie mods..

p.s im being kind, other dudes might flame you  happy reading

You'd be surprised how capable a stock zook is. Slap a set of better tyres on it to give more grip and away you go.

If you wanted a zook ready to go without needing work done you should be lookin round the 2 grand mark. This should get you a nice neat zook with rego. My suggestion would be to get a Wide Track Sierra (1989 onwards) as these models have a wider stance (more stable).

Have a good look through the Sierra Bible to get an understanding of popular modifications that people do. And if you dont understand something try using the search first, chances are someone has already asked and the info will be found by searching

Depends on what your definition of capable is. But to give you and idea when you hit Fraser Island 1 in 5 cars over there is a backpacker driven sierra tearing around stock as a rock with pizza cutters for tyres.

As for pricing it depends on how educated you are with mechanics and what your prepared to do. I've bought 2 sierras in the last year. First was stock and had nothing to be done to get RWC. The second had a 2 inch body lift, 2 inch spring lift and vitara 1.6L engine. I had to do a couple of axle, transfer and g/box seals to get RWC. Each one cost me 2 grand a piece.

If you do a search there are plenty of threads that ask the exact same questions that your asking. These threads will be a lot more informative than this one because people tend to not reply to topics that have been flogged to death in the past.

thanks for your help guys much apprecited.
how do you tell the wide body from non wide body. the mechanical aspect is not a problem the old man is x race mech, we both know our stuf.

as for capiable yes frasier isl is perfect as we are planing a trip up there and i wanna be able to keep up with the old man in the ranger.

thanks guys will consult the bible asap.
500-1000 sounds good as i would prefer to build it up myself.

thanks for the advice guys any more you got will be apreciated.

sierra

friend of mine sold their 93 stock as a rock sierra with 150 000 in great nic for $6250.

i was going to sell mine but then realised the brain snap i had and decided to keep it. mine is 90WT with 220 000 k's 2 inch springs, aftermarket shocks and 24 mnth old 30inch all terrains and was offered $5000(with only 3 weeks rego). all i really want is front and rear lockers and i'll be happy as.

if your in sydney carsales and trading post will be expensive.

good luck with the search.....awesome cars, you wont look back

yea i wide track is 89 onwards as zooker pointed out (only found this out myself yesterday)......havent seen heapd in syd on ebay., few in st marys area though....most seem to be in QLD.

you looking for s/top or h/top???

and searching through all the info here is like a goldmine. there is always someone who has done all you could think reasonable to a zook. where abouts in syd are you?? i saw a few in granville dealerships along parramatta rd that aren't advertised on the web. most of them were for $4999, but should get a fair bit off that price.

hey reprise,
im in mascot, but i dont mind driving to find a zook, i was thinking hard top as i have a sound system that i want to transfer over, however i am real keen on the s/top cause they are just soo cool to 4x4 in. so i think i will try to find s/top.
where abouts on parramatta road did you seem them mate?
i would prefer a stock one as love working on cars and think it would be a gud experiance to do it all myself.

zooks

Post by reprise »

i have 6x9's in the back and 4's in the front with a clairon head in my soft top and love the system. it was done professionaly prior to me getting the zook. Cd play never misses a beat nore skips even offroad, never seen anything like it in all my life. if im in my mates lowered lancer(gay) his skips all the time cos of the bumpy ride. point being you can have a great system in a soft top.

parramatta rd...auto ally between parra/granville, there is about 150 000 dealerships, i was there about 8 weeks ago and saw three zooks just driving along, head down there and have a look.

then give the Watagans a run.....awesome spot, love it up there, not too far away either.

also i agree with the soft top....look way better and good in summer, no need for air con. just get a rollcage(which i desperatley need)

yea, the system i have in almost competion grade thats why im not keen on having 200o dollars worth of amps etc lying around in a soft top, ohh well ill make doo.

ohk ill be sure to have a look in auto alley then.

what have you done too your zook so far? if you raise 2'' and want 2 put 30's on would you need new rims? i know i should look in the bible but as we are already talking i thought i might ask.

They're pretty shithouse, I wouldn't recommend one. Too heavy, too much power to be useful, way too hard to modify for offroad use and parts are bloody rare so when you break things (and you will) it'll take forever to find replacements.

Best to stick to a Patrol or Cruiser I think...

(all said tongue in cheek :D )

If you want a cheap as capable offroader, get a WT, move the rear springs up front, 2" suspension lift in rear, weld up the rear diff (lock), Flip a set of 15x7" steel sunraiser rims (cheap as chips), with some aggressive 29" & some extended flares to cover them should do the trick. You'd probably be able to find some rims (and maybe even tyres) in the for sale section on here for real cheap if your willing to wait/hunt around:D

dee you have it spot on mate.
thats is my plan to a dime, expcept for the rear diff, as im an in 2 minds aboutb locking it. will 29's or 30's muck the spedo and ratios up? do zooks wear tyres badly if i was to use 29's as dailys? or would it be worth using the stock n then putting 29's on to 4x4?

30's is a big increase over stock - your speedo will be out around 15%... and gearing might be an issue on road too... but zuk's definitely dont chew through tyres... i had 215/75 cooper HT tyres on my zuk for 3 years before the rears ran out, and the fronts still had about 40% left on them (i liked doing skiddies).

30 inch tyres are fine, my firestones are over 2 years old and plenty of tread left. Speedo is out.......about 15% good skills alien.

i can sit on 110 in 5th on a flat easy with standard gearing, up hills however a drop back to third is sometimes needed.

Youve read the wrong bit of the thread I was pointing to mate. Check out the mods to the back of the speedo spring'(the pic). The $450 is for a ratio box inline in the speedo cable. You don't need it if you mod the back fo the speedo. ITS FREE! :)

Nah I've never been bothered. I can't get 30s and up engineered up here anyway so its not like a necessity to get it on the road. I just have a feel for my speed and I havent been proven wrong as of yet.

A mate of mine who is a cop said something to me the other day about our rules (qld) coming up to the same standard as NSW, so this should mean getting things like 30's on a zook will be easier. just need to see an engineer.

give this guy a call in regards to speedo correction
Image
All i did was tell him what my speedo indicated and how fast i was actually going and he sent me a new speedo cable with a correction box inline for about $170 if memory serves me correctly.
