max boost for a 300 tdi

Post by cooter »

i know its been asked before but search was useless i have done all the fuel pump tweaks and also respeced the pump but want to up the boost for a couple extra stallions what is safe on standard turbo and intercooler?
and what is max on a water to air system?
i was thinking about maybe 17 to 18 psi but wasnt sure about how it would handle it it has 200 000 on the clock

mine runs around 16.5-17 psi, and I wouldn't be comfortable going any further as it's done 240,000km and still the original head gasket.

From reports on the UK boards it sounds as if the head gasket is marginal above 17-18psi even when new, so if you wanted to go above this it'd pay to O ring the block or head.

I have had about 20 psi from the stock turbo with the wastegate held closed.

The problem is the stock compressor has poor efficiency at that pressure, The compressor wheel is creating a lot heat in the charge air, for not much gain in air flow.

I'm in the process of swapping the 300Tdi out of my rangie and when I get around to it will take the turbo from it and put it on my disco 300Tdi. That turbo has a compressor more suited for higher boost pressure. Both compressors are garrett M27 housings but the stock 300Tdi is A/R 48, vs A/R 52 on the better compressor.

I regretted not o-ringing the 300Tdi before I put it in the rangie. With the disco I am hoping to get ARP studs instead of the stock head bolts in the disco. I expect they will do the job. Just need to get some measurements to allow me to chase up the studs.

Edit: BTW, I read on another forum that the new rover head gaskets for the 300Tdi are all metal. That was news to me, so I hope it is correct.

read that a couple of times now, too.
It would be nice, particularly as mine is the thickest one, too. (no holes)

I'm guessing the 300Tdi product spec will still be updated for a while to come until the UK army drop theirs. (I hope)
