Handbrake cables with leaf over.

I have a leaf over and the handbrake mount on the drum brake will not work as the leaf is in the way. See picture to know what Im talking about, cable pulls from left to right but mount hits the leaf.

Anyone else have this problem??

You could weld/bolt some steel to the lever that runs through the backing plate extending it and you can angle it enough so it'll give full pull on it. Have you tried adjusting the handbrake properly back cable off, Adjust shoes correctly then set cable right.

You have a hilux. It came factory Leaf over. Its not a conversion someone done they are all like this. I cant see the pic but im guessing you either have a heap of leaves in the spring pack or it has lift blocks under the springs. You need to extend the height of the leaver so it clears the springs.

Ruff, yeh mate there is 4 leafs in the pack. Will have to cut the lever and try extend it I guess.

Might have a go at adjusting the shoes ect as you said Sic.

Pic works for me now Either the hand brake is allready on in that pic or the arms are seized in the out possition. That small stopper bolt you can see below the cable should be back against the backing plate when the handbrake is off.

Had the same issue with my old lux.

But when I looked at other suspension it all looked the same.

there is an adjustment bolt which decides how far that arm sits from the plate when the handbrake is off. make sure the arms are still moving freely and rest back to the plate when released (mine had seized up). use this adjustment to take out excess leaver pull distantce.

If its no locking by the time you hit the springs then I think the issue is internal. You can test this by lifting the end of the cable over the spring pack (it allows you to pull it another cm or so) if its still not locking the hand brake then its definitely internal.

when you pull off your wheel and drum and pull the handbreak on are the shoes moving much? they should move the same as when someone puts the foot brake on.

are your rear breaks working at? are the shoes and drumn within wear limits? the drum will state on it its maximum wear diameter 295mm or something like that.

if all looks ok but the shoes just arent moving enough the pull it to bits as smehting inside is not doing its job - what ever is meant to move the shoes is either worn or broken or basdly adjusted. take lost of photos of the system from a few angles then pull it apart, take more pics at differant stages so you always have a record of how it should go back together. While its appart put in some new seals on your brake slave cylinders to ensure you dont have to go near it again. then bleed your breaks and put in new fluid.

If you work out the back brakes just arent working then check the self adjust system. (its likely in this instance that both problems are related - but there is a slim chance your break lines or slave cylinder are stuffed and its a separate issue)

That breaks system is self adjusting - when you roll back and put the brakes on it should self readjust. is this working? if not you can adjust it by inserting a small flat head screw driver into the back of the drum, there is a little slot at the bottom and work the wheel around inside (it has teeth for the screw driver to bite into) turn it a bit then make sure the wheel is spinning without dragging on the shoes. once it gets to tight back it off a little bit and see how it runs.

ANY TIME YOU PLAY WITH YOUR BRAKES ALWAYS TEST THEM WELL BEFORE YOU GO FOR A BIG BLAST SOMEWHERE AND FIND THEY DONT WORK.
