I actually have the Maximum Boost book by Corky Bell. I have been thinking about making my own for a few weeks now, and i'm leaning more and more towards it as one of my mates owns a fabrication workshop = no labour charges and cheap materials.
Might even make a few if it ever happens.

I don't see the sense in paying $4000 for a kit, that I can source myself, and pay under $1500. Call me sensible, but.....

I have a 308 in my hatchback in the late nineties, had the crank offset ground, used mopar rods, notched the bottom sides of the bores and whammo! 308 is now a 337 with heaps more torque. That engine did over 80,00 kms and a quarter mile in 12.4 in street trim.
I'm not after that for my gu dx td42 with 335,000, but I think I can get a manifold for $185, GT28 (garrett) $450 (reconditioned), father in law is diesel fitter, so he's got the fuel pump sorted and any possible rebuild. Couple of more bucks for piping and hoses and I think I'm done.
So can we have more ideas to create our own setups? It's not that hard, or is it? I've read some flamin' good ideas here, and that's how we all can benefit!

basically how I see it all you need is the exhaust manifold (im sure denco/DTS etc can supply them im guessing for around the $250 mark
then all you have to do is find a turbo with say a T3 front and as long as its got a small exhaust wheel (nothing over .60 exhaust wheel) your in business even a GT2530 should be reasonable size $300-400
or you could pick up a turbo from a late model patrol..
the more bigger the A/R on the exhaust wheel the more lag you will have, all depends when you want it to come on boost..
while your at it grab a intercooler from a WRX or simmilar bit of stainless pipe and silicon hoses $500
then all you need to do is wind up the boost and fuel and keep and eye on the pyro
all up you would be looking around the $1100
and you will be cranking out alot more power than what a stock DTS/Denco kit could offer for $3,500-4000...

Yep, looked at the GT2530, GT2860rs (disco potato), GT28 and roller bearing T3. I can't remebr which kit, AXT I think, they provide a T28. This turbo is standard. Know a guy that works at MTQ (the same mob that had the article about improving the factory turbo for bout $2500!!!!! he told me that most commonly, T28/T3 tdo4 is good for average joe with little lag. Want the bigger power/comp truck/always towing the camper, go the gt2860rs or the tdo4h straight from the wrx. Only prob there is the manifold bolts don't match. So buggered there?????

We just like being able to actually stick our heads, and our hands in the engine bay and know what is wrong, and are able to fix it. Other wise I'd have bought a zd30????

For the amount of cheap, cheap, nasty "home made" turbo kits i've seen over the years, i have complete faith in myself in regards to building a kit. Hell, i've done two oddball conversions already (EA falcon about 6 years ago, and Datsun 180B 2 years ago).
The only issue i can see with ANY of these DIY kits is the fuel pump. Apparently you can get your pump modded with a genuine nissan boost compensator and calibrated for about $800. Or so i have been told....

First step is getting header "blanks" cut to give me a starting point, and a GT28 ball bearing mounting flange to give me a finish point for the manifold. Baby steps....

im planning to turbo my 93 RX 4.2 petty/lpg, allready have the flange thanks to the Hitech headers that came on it ebay t3/t4 turbo is what will be going on it, either a FMIC or a wrx top mount or an rs liberty WAIC.
ive got my own tig welder to use too
you can also get the tdo5h off the mitsu evo engines or gsr engines. these turbos have the square looking flange on them so would be better suited than the wrx version turbos which have the triangle flange.
i am looking at doing a turbo setup on the budget for my gq td42.
what i have come up with is the cast manifold from mtq for 480inc which i thought was pretty cheap saves making one up. now that manifold has t3 flange on it so going to track down a rb25 skyline turbo and wack that on. front mount cooler for $150 brand new and that should do. plus exhaust and other pipe work required. once tuned should produce close to 145hp at rears.

Maybe see if they can supply the inlet manifold crossover pipe/plate too??Only cause its a bastard to fab up, when it'll probly only cost $100 to buy.
Maybe also put up a tender in the new thread for an OL member to supply the goods. There's a few members that work in the industry that might be able to get a good deal.
