how do you make an adapter for turbo->manifold

hey guys,

just wondering what the best, cheapest, easiest approach would be to make an adapter from my exhaust manifold (3bolt) to a 4bolt turbo housing?

I have some 10mm flat bar that I could use.. is it just a matter of getting the stud pattern for a T3/4/28 garrett and for the exhaust manifold and making it work?

I guess I'd need to take it somewhere to do the 2inch hole in the middle..

has anyone here made their own adapter?
is 10mm too thin?

I'm using a flipped 3B exhaust manifold so If i can keep the height of the adapter plate to a minimum it would be good.

Buy a turbo flagne plate off eBay, with gaskets and studs = $40. The rest you can just booty fab. It helps if you have access to oxy cutter or similar. It doesn't have to look pretty, just as long as its strong. Lots of weight hanging off it.

yeah i wanto booty fab a flipped manifold aswell but it means the power steering pump has to go somewhere else. not an option.

thick, flat steel plate is the best way to do it. 15- 20mm plate would be good

I thought it was just the pump reservoir you had to relocate to get it to fit? It would suck if thats not the case... unfortunately the guy that uploaded his pix to my gallery hasn't got a factory power steering pump either.. so i can't tell how it'd work on his setup..

I might ask on ih8mud and see what the guys have done over there in regards to a flipped manifold..

Great offer.
You should mention that the power steering reservoir would be in the way of a straight flipped stock manifold from models from 1983 onwards, at least on a bj60.

THe problem with the power steering is the resevoire, the air intake on the turbo points right at it. So i took a resevoire and o ring elbow fitting off a 85 toy mini truck and mounted the resevoire to the fire wall. The little elbow o ring thingy fits right in the pump just like the tank does.

See that big empty space behind the turbo, why not make a whole new manifold and put the turbo in there? Don't need to move any P/S gear then.

as booty fab is not my forte I'm trying to avoid as much fab as possible.. I can manage moving a power steering resevoir .. but i definately think making my own manifold is out of my league at the moment.

You're looking at a left hand drive vehicle, there may not be as much room as appears when it's rhd, tho I must admit I'd make a new manifold... I would have thought a 25 mm plate with as small od as possible as an adapter. The challenge would be to not have the bolts from the opposite sides clash....... perhaps I should make 1 and sell it.

I was hoping I'd see him add to this thread.. I'd be keen to know what IHI turbo he used (and where he sourced it)..

anyway.. what are peoples thoughts on a setup similar to this? This would help having to move the power steer reservoir and could aid in the better positioning of the turbo next to the airbox?

i have a flipped manifold i might sell to you. it has the original outlet ground off and a new cast iron outlet welded in its place. it think it is a T25 flange. it was to suit a GT17 turbo. P.M. me if your interested.

I'm starting to think I might be able to get more room or a better position for the turbo using the adapter in the last pic from ih8mud...

I found this turbo on ebay... IHI Turbo off Subaru 1800 .. i wonder if its similar to the one that BJ has used..?

you can weld a small piece of pipe between the flanges, if you are running a body lift, this will allow the turbo to clear the PS pump and the bonnet to clear the turbo, (you need 50mm)

or you could space the bonnet up 10-15mm and cut the strengthening rib in the centre..

yeah IHI turbos are on most subarus

mine looked similar to that, but was a tiny bit different. (was probably the same in terms of inlet and outlet shapes, cant tell size from picture)

whatever you do, make sure you get the rear flange its a prick to make that from scratch... (dump pipe bit)

also you could mount a 60 series power steer where the aircon goes and ditch the aircon and the high power steer, run a remote reservoir like 60/75 series and solve your other issues.

I did all that ten years ago, and i cant remember what i did last week!!

or bring something with USB capability, ive got a external HD enclosure we could assemble it and i could show you the whole deal.

Turbo/steering, power steer pump, exhaust, turbo manifolds, shock tower, etc etc etc.

you could buy a proper 13BT manifold (try jap engine recyclers) its got a centre mid mount turbo flange for more room again... I would suggest $50 - $100??? (thats if you could find one, i got given one for my brothers cruiser) ill show you his turbo 3B setup if you like! lots of stainless too..

or find me a chitty old power supply (for cheap) ill bang it in put on USB and bring into work and post on outers for all to enjoy.

I was referring to the wealth of info on the 3b junkyard turbo setup in the diesel section of ih8mud.. those guys have used all sorts of things to make it work.. so the stuff there is a good starting point for this mod.

I'll be busy most of the weekend but should be free on monday.. I'll pm you my email..
