Steps for removing CV shaft

Hey Guys,

I got a '99 NL Shorty, I replaced both CV's 2 weeks ago with 2 new complete shafts.

Well anyway was out in the Watagans today going up some pretty big rock steps and shattered an outer cup on the passenger side.

just a few questions some may be able to answer.

1) is the car ok to drive with no shaft?

The inner cup is still in the diff housing. ( I removed the shaft from he cup in the car) and the outer cup is half there. drove fine home from the bush, but didnt know if it would affect anything.

2) when replacing the shaft last time I had to totally release all tension on the torsion bars to remove the hub assembely. Is that the right way to go or is there an easier way?

Don't need to release torsion bars. Just the top and bottom ball joints and the steering joint at the front. It is a heavy sod to try and do while keeping it al together, it is alot easier to take the circlip off that holds the outer cv to the hub and seperate them that way.

The only thing I can think of if you drive it with the inner cv still in place is that it could potentially just fall out and then you'd lose your diff oil and dirt would get in then it'd be a nightmare!

Suggest Free wheeling hubs and possibly a change in driving style if you are breaking Pajero cv's......

I've got the car all apart, but cant seem to get the inner joint out. try pry bars etc but no luck

its just the inner joint there, the shaft was ripped out in the bush, so there is nothing really to grab onto.

when I replaced the shaft 2 weeks ago, the old one (with shaft still attached) just popped out with a bit of a yank on it.

Any idea's?

whereabouts on the coast are you??? if iv got time i could give you a hand, done it a thousand times, even been in the same situation breaking cvs.

Finally got it, 2 pry bars and a bit of persuasion. So thanks for your offer of help anyway.


I attached a few pics of the 2 week old shaft, luckily they replaced it under warranty.
