Tough nut to crack

Team,
I have tried countless options to get the nuts of BOTH my rear and front diffs with no success. I have just basically rounded the front diff nut. :bad-words:
I have come to the point where I should just give in and hand it over to a mechanic to get the b@stard.
Any thoughts?

I'm guessing it is the drive flange retaining nut on the pinion = difficult/impossible to get to...

i dont know the nut your talking about but if can you get to it with a grinder grind one edge down as far as possible and hit it with a cold chisel

i think its the drain plug your on about?

if so mate just drill a hole 12-14mm and tap the hole and use a new bolt in the existing one you rounded :)

im going to do this with the landcruiser

by drill/tap & add new to bolt to the existing drain plug you might be lowering the clearence, have seen this done B4, & have also seen the new modified drain plug ripped out of the rig over rocks,only to be found when that loud clunking / banging noise of the diff centre disintergrating starts to happen.. just weld a nuw nut to the existing one & try again, then replace it & weld on a protector ring to go around it ( cut the ring from thick pipe )

X2 - Piglet is spot on.

Happens with sierras all the time, not helped by the fact they use a 3/8" square drive plug that isn't deep enough to fully engage.

X3 with piglets idea, run a tap/die up into the thread to clean it up afterwards and put in a new plug so you dont have issue in the future.

do it once do it properly.

Give them a good hard crack with a hammer then put single hex socket on them. Or after good hard crack, nail them with cold chisel in the undo direction.

Did you by chance use a multi-position socket?
As said above smack the bottom of it with a hammer as this might break the rust on the thread and use a impact socket and a ratchet/breaker bar to undo....

The impact socket has the bigger flats on it and there is less chance of stripping the edges off the nuts.

otherwise weld a nut to it and use that to undo it....

Same thing happened to my hilux on the transfercase and gear box. welded a nut to it and it works a treat. if you get it off buy a new one from east coast or some thing and they have more meat on them, so your less likely to strip it.

I had the same thing happen to me on the weekend but I was trying to remove the bash plate on the patrol.

After I rounded the nut I just took to it with a wood chisel until it dug its groove and started to turn it, they I got out the multi grips and got it out.

mate get an impact driver put an adator to suit be it 3/8th, 1/2 or 3/4 or inpact socket, clean it up best you can, get a large purswasion stick and give it a wallop... if that doesnt work get a chissle and perswasion stick and give it a wallop smacking it in the way to undoo it.

NOTE: lots of rust off over hours, even days if you have to. you will get it
